We recently put up an ad in a spanish newspaper looking for kitchen help. Thus far, we have received phone calls from about 15 people. When they call, the only thing we tell them is to please come at a certain time so we can talk in person, they all say thank you and that they will see you soon. Thus far, 14 out of 15 people have not shown up for the appointment. Is this a cultural thing? How can such a high percentage of people make an appointment for a job that I assume they need and not show up?
Sold a TV on Craigslist 6 mo ago. I gave priority to the first people who responded, and made appointments to look at it accordingly. First person to say he was available was a middle-aged Hispanic guy who I told to meet me after work. He never came and never answered his phone after setting up the appointment. I sold it to this younger white lady the next morning.
I think people in general are I considerate of other people... We live in a me first world. This one lady pulled out and blocked two labs to illegally wait in the third lane this morning, blocking all of the cars from going through a light for nearly a minute. She pretending not to notice the constant honking and line of cars she denied passage. Point in case... People are more selfish than ever...
I think it's more a low-wage worker thing than an hispanic thing. It may be transportation or schedule problems resulting from not making much money. Or, it could be they don't make much money because they're the sort of person to not show up to interviews.
All the pertinent information about the job was in the ad. and all the conversations went like this: "hi I am looking for job in ad" "ok we are located at [our address], please come by at [appointment time]" "ok thank you, I will see you then" and that's it.
There's definitely a cultural part of it where punctuality and respecting another's time isn't as important, but it's not exclusive to Latinos. It's moreso coming from an older generational rural lifestyle where timing wasn't as important and people weren't as busy. In today's modern world, that doesn't work.
My experience has been the opposite. Those in my generation and older (40+) have always been far more punctual and considerate of schedules than younger folks.
I hold power of attorney for SeƱor SwoLy, and he would like to say... Spoiler . He has nothing else to add on that matter! Clearly he knows what he's talking about! ....... ...... ......
