    Glocks = teh suck.

If you're gonna buy a non-1911 type pistol, get a Sig or an HK. Don't go cheap when it comes to handguns.

My father always swore by shotguns for home defense. An argument that he always used was that, if loaded with the proper ammo, you didn't have to worry with shooting through a wall and killing a loved one.

I'm not really sure what the best ammo for home defense is, but it's something to think about.

I agree about having shotguns around for the best home defense.

handguns in a panic might be too hard to handle not just for you but for your loved ones.

I think just the sound of someone loading a shotgun is enough to send people / or zombies off running.

I also agree about the collateral damage statement someone mentioned earlier.

I think the range of the shots is very limited ..

I'd like to take you up on that offer. I don't shoot as much as I use to (small kids take up my time) but I've been thinking about adding some WWII rifles to my collection.

walmart and academy. They are cheapest place to get shotguns unless carters country is having a sale. You can get a good shotgun for around 200 bucks. The remington 870 express is a nice shotgun. You can even get a mossberg with a pistol grip for that much if it is totally for self defense.

    Thanks!

Looks like I'll be buying more than groceries on my weekly Saturday excursion to Wal-Mart.

If you have a shot gun in your basket... I'm sure you'd have a lot less rude shoppers annoying you than usual..

My Dad was living in a ground floor apartment for awhile, and his bedroom window, above his bed, looked out on the covered parking. One night, he woke up hearing someone trying to open that window. He got his pistol out of his nightstand, pointed it at the window, with his head still below it, pulled the hammer back, and heard a tremendous crash. Dad jumped up in time to see the perp scrambling over the hood of a sedan, across the roof, and down the trunk lid! He said he'd never seen anyone move that fast.

After that, he kept it loaded.

hey guys, I'm thinking about buying a hand gun, are Tauras 9mm any good, or Baretta 9mm? I currently have a Mossberg shot-gun @ home for protection.

Aren't Berettas considered the standard? Or do I just think that from watching too many movies...?

Well.....it sucks to not be able to get to this site at work anymore.

As for home defense, I'm kind of funny about keeping a loaded weapon in the house. I'm really just looking at this for fun.

I've just about narrowed my choices down to an HK USP .45 ACP or a Springfield Armory XD in .45 GAP. One is expensive with cheap ammo.....the other is cheap with expensive ammo. Both are highly rated.

drapg.......Wal-mart does have good prices, but I wouldn't go there to get questions answered. Stick with Carter's Country or Gander Mountain if you want to speak with someone who actually might know something. They also have pretty good prices and excellent selection.

If it is between the two of those definately go with the Beretta. It is a much better gun. Might want to check out Smith and Wesson in that $ range also.

As far as a place to buy a shotgun or any gun for that matter. Go to a place that has plenty of guns and see which one fits you best. Try a place like Carter's Country, Gander Mountain, Academy, or Bass Pro. Most of these places will match prices. Personally I would go to Carter's Country if I had a bunch of questions, but if I knew pretty much what I'm looking for I would go to Gander Mountain.
