Can a lawyer remove something from my credit report? I had signed a "karate contract" when I was 18 and decided not to go. Well, 6 months later, he moves his store to San Antonio. I have a feeling this is still on my record. What would you guys do in my situation? I guess I should get a credit report and if possible, talk to a lawyer?

Let me first state that I am not a lawyer, nor am I in law school. It is not immediately obvious to me why I was lumped in a group consisting of lawyers/law students, and frankly it is mildly insulting;) , nonetheless I will answer your question.

What you can do is contact the three major credit bureaus used in Texas. They will send you a copy of your credit report, as it exists in their files. Each bureau compiles your credit report differently, so I would request all three. Should you see a listing on your credit report that you disagree with, you can put this item in dispute and the matter will typically be resolved within 30 days. In order to receive your credit report, you will need to send them a copy of your driver's license, a copy of your social security card, 5 years of living history and a letter requesting the report. Here is the contact information for the agencies:

    Experian National Consumer Assistance Center
    PO Box 2104
    Allen, TX 75013-2104

    CSC (Equifax) Credit Information Services
    PO Box 674402
    Houston, TX 77267

    Trans Union Corporation
    PO Box 1000

I just did it online, no problem.

Does anyone know of an Austin area credit specialist that can help?

Be careful about using agencies to 'fix' credit problems. You should have no problem getting ahold of one of the many free credit counciling services.

Thanks to everyone. Apparently, it's not on there (although that thing was hard to read).

Also, does rental history and utility/cable bills go on there? They were nowhere to be found on my report.

Typically rental history does not go on there. It certainly CAN, but typically landlords don't want to spend the bucks to report it. Instead thay report to a landlord's association or a similar group. That way, other landlord's will be able to evaluate your rental history without going to the expense required to report you to equifax.
