So I eat more of it nowadays. Some "real" some "fraud" sushi. In Japan do they have anything similar to the Sushi we see in America like Shaggy Dog, Spider Rolls, Crunchy rolls? Are they called different things or are they just American take on an autherntic item. Would a Japanese person walk into Aka and wonder what the hell is going on?
Real Japanese sushi is just a piece of fish on rice. Sashimi is just the fish. The "rolls" you are talking about are called Maki, and they in fact eat Maki. Usually without all the additive mayo based sauces though.
They exist, I guess. It's not like Americans would think of putting nori on rice. But most of it is just fish on rice, with some wasabi or soysauce, and I don't like the rolls at all myself.
HEB Sushi is gross. Uchi in montrose is the place to impress a date. great food and vibe. price is high but that's expected for a good sushi place.
Fraud sushi is for men that wear 5" vibrant colored khaki shorts and shop at Whole Foods. Now I just snort wasabi and inject 6,500mg of sodium directly into my veins.

in japan the fish is so good that they really don't need to add much more to affect the flavors. also, tuna is far more common...while american and european sushi typically features a lot of salmon as well.
Just remember, when you eat 'ethnic' food, it's not really what they eat in those areas. We eat mostly tex mex, not Mexican. Indian, Chinese, sushi, etc. All that is Americanized.
Uchi is not a traditional Japanese restaurant. A highly bastardized version. That said, it's the best restaurant in Htown.

The only way that kid even knows the name Uchi is from reading threads about restaurants we talk about on this board or he went with his parents. Just ignore him. I try to but people keep quoting him.
Check out Sasaki Japanese Restaurant. I've found they're much more authentic than every other place I've been to in Houston, and I've been to quite a few. Not saying it IS authentic, just more similar.
