I'm writing an album, wrote more like, but the bands I've been listening to are starting wear thin on my ears. MCR, Panic at the Disco, Fall Out Boy...I've been on the modern punk influence to much and I need to get back to at least the 90s. Smash and Dookie reside permanently in my brain, so something similar but not particularly those albums. NOFX album where it's all one song too, something else please!!! Ready? Set..... SUGGESTIONS!!!
Falling Sickness - Because the World has Failed Us Both Pulley - Esteem Driven Engine Frenzal Rhomb - A Man's Not a Camel Almighty Trigger Happy - I'll Shut Up When You F*ck Off (or Killatron 2000) Propagandhi - Less Talk, More Rock Good Riddance - A Comprehensive Guide to Modern Rebellion Selby Tigers - Charm City The Nobodys - Generation XXX Dillinger 4 - Midwestern Songs of the Americas Bad Religion - Against the Grain Fifteen - Lucky Millencolin - Same Old Tunes The Dwarves - ...are Young and Good Looking Randy - You Can't Keep a Good Band Down Lagwagon - Hoss Heckle - the Complicated Futility of Ignorance I tried to name a bunch of 90's albums that have a good range between melodic pop and hardcore angst. Also bands that have really intelligent things to say and bands that like to shock with their lyrics. Let me know if this is what you are looking for, and I can throw out some more for you. I can add some 80's albums too, if that helps.
Any love for Jeff Rosenstock here? He and his band played at White Oak Music Hall last month -- his live shows are incredible.
If you're in to early 90s grunge/rock - the Pixies are an obvious place to start; their first two albums are seminal. Jesus & Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth (Daydream Nation!), the Minutemen, Husker Du, Pavement, Joy Division... @Buck Turgidson listed Repeater - it's fantastic; I second that recommendation.
Turns out a lot of what I thought was metal is punk, I have no idea what constitutes punk, but I like a lot of the punk that I thought was metal. I don't like the whiney 90's style that was 'big' except the Offspring and a few Green Day songs but I don't know any more.
A lot of songs fit into punk while the bands that make them may not. There's a lot of songs that fit into multiple genres and a lot of bands that fit into multiple genres. Like...Funeral for a Friend could be alternative metal...but they're definitely punk influenced. As a side note, a lot of it is based on the themes of the music in general. I can tell you one band that sure as hell isn't punk; ****ing Weezer. FOH with that garbage.
13 Songs too, I pretty much tried to wear out those 2 CDs back in the day, still listen to them here and there.
there is some 80's/90's crossover but... Rancid, Descendants, Blink 182, Pennywise, Bad Religion, Vandals, Operation Ivy, VooDoo GLow Skulls (more ska-y), Sum 41, you can never go wrong with the classics, ala Ramones. I recently got into Parquet Courts, which i think would fall into the punk spectrum somewhere
Some of the greatest music ever made - takes me back to high school. Now I need to go hop on my SMA Mullen.
I know - but once I saw someone post Weezer, I figured the standards had been lowered........ Plus, he referenced Smash and Dookie, right? I'm not sure they're punk, either - but I bet the bands I listed had a big influence on them....
