1967: Sargent: Kid, have you rehabilitated yourself? Arlo: you got a lot a damn gall to ask me if I've rehabilitated myself, I mean, I mean, I mean that just, I'm sittin' here on the bench, I mean I'm sittin here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug.
Yeah our prison population has accelerated in America and do think it is somewhat of an industry. There's just something not right about throwing certain lesser violent criminals and younger individuals being thrown into a dangerous, environment with the gang bangers; rapists; wife beaters; child molestors; and other wise individuals who are clinically psycho. Where gang violence; rape; abuse; and murder is permitted or somewhat looked with a blind eye sometimes. Worst part of all, a good proportion of these people are going to be back out in society one day. That's the scary part with no type of rehabilitation; no real vocational/educational training; or clinical counseling (I'm think more about the violent criminals; gang bangers; rapist; and child molesters). I know there were two countries that put an emphasis on rehabilitation, I think Japan was one of them. It has also been shown in studies that prisons with more active rehabilitation programs tend to have lower rates of recidivism (repeat offenders). Also, they are being punished regardless, just for being in prison and not being able to go as they please, rightfully so. I would mainly focus on the ones not doing that much time, or the ones who are involved in petty crimes; repeat offenses of petty crimes; and the younger inmates who aren't too far gone yet or people who seem like they need to be put on the right track. Most of the rapists; overly violent ones; serial killers; and child molestors can be left in their to rott for the most part in their own little world, but maybe help the few that might can be rehabilitate and are likely to be done with their sentence in few years. It kind of scares to say just punish them and be done with it, and let them come back into society as if nothing happened. Shouldn't prison be treated, like a mental hospital of sorts, where they aren't just locking someone away, but trying to make them act more appropriate in society with so many freedoms.
we have to think long and hard about the criminal justice system. most of the offenders today seem to be related to drug offenses. i think in the case of violent crimes, most of them happen out of rage so its really a pointless question. if a guy is just violent and will keep repeating on releases, eventually he will not get released. murders will be held long enough as well as rapists. sex offenders will be tracked. the real key is people who commit crimes for money because they are either drug users are just feel they have no other options. some drug dealers just aren't going standard route and want to make quick cash. how do you change that attitude. if you legalize most drugs will they just find another way to make quick cash. its a complicated issue
Neither seems to work, because we're not made to live in complex societies like the one's we live in. We're meant to be tribal hunter-gatherers, our society has evolved much faster than our bodies and brains. Of course, we're screwed over. We're doomed to be unhappy and out of place in our society, but society has modeled us so thta we can't function in a hunter-gatherer tribe.
