I don't think that Elon Musk was trying to do a Nazi salute - nor do I believe that he is a Nazi. I do believe that it was cringe though - and really hard to explain other than Musk is a socially awkward guy that has said and done some weird things.
Yes, agree with all of it. It was a bad look. Dude is socially awkward. He has done and said other stupid things in the past (like when he called the rescue diver in Thailand a pedo or whatever). From what I hear, he does take certain drugs, which might impact his behaviour sometimes. Doesn't make him a Nazi though.
Musk is certainly a WASP and has ingrained biases and superiority tendencies. He isn't going down to the local KKK meeting or attending Neo- Nazi meetings - but he is clearly influenced by his upbringing and narcissism. He thinks HE is better than everyone else.

When you rely on Winston Churchill to argue that someone isn't a racist or a classist--- well you have already lost. Winston Churchill has his place in World history and we can debate the merits but - he wasn't exactly the shinning beacon of anti-racism or anti-classism.

I agree - Musk isn't a Nazi. He has no affiliating with Nazi's or Neo-Nazi's that I am aware of. I believe he is a classist and that he has some biases for sure --- but his "salute" wasn't an attempt to let everyone know he is a closeted Nazi. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses --- Musk is an exceptional businessperson, but he isn't able to navigate people like Reagan or Obama.
He's too smart to make THAT BIG of a "mistake" THAT many times (2 hard, 1 soft) on THAT BIG of a stage. Seriously. And Trump should be pissed too, someone he granted govt appointment to, doing THAT at his inauguration. Embarrassing. If truly an accident. So the solution is simple (if truly an accident) - come out and aggressively denounce the idea of it and own the mistake. Has he done that? Just checking. Maybe I missed it. My guess is he saw the backlash from the extremists over the H1B thing (not that that's an extremist-only issue, but that group was turning on him over it, the ones he likes to appease with the pepe the frog pics) and tried to compensate.
