the question is, 40gig or 80gig? 80 has some backwards compat. while 40 has none.. but if you ignore that, is there any difference besides the obvious space? And is there any need for that space?

Plenty of good advice in here so far. Especially the part about the HDTV. Sports broadcasts especially will never be the same for you. I have both the 360 and the PS3, and I have to say I prefer the PS3. It's true that most games will eventually be available on both, but free online (especially if you like Madden) and most importantly the blu-ray drive make it better as far as I'm concerned. It does suck that Sony didn't put in some IR support for universal remotes though. Sort of hampers the whole blu-ray player aspect of it. I know about the various workarounds for this problem, but they shouldn't be necessary.

But the real reason I'm replying is that I have a question: did you go with "hoee ass" because "hoe ass" was already taken?

I'm not sure if Hoe ass was already taken, but I went with two double E's because maybe I thought it would give the name some character.

What about you? Did you go with Jebus because Jesus was taken? :D

Yup, and like RC mentioned, they have good western rpgs like Mass Effect and Fable 2 (soon.)

There are a couple of other j-rpgs out on 360 as well, such as Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon.

I love my 360, but if I were you, I'd grab a PS3. I know you said you aren't into the blu ray thing now, but give it time. Besides that, it's a kick ass upconverter.

There aren't a whole lot of RTS games on either console, but a multi-platform Civilization game (not pure RTS, mind you) designed for both just came out and it's supposed to be pretty decent, considering RTS suck balls on consoles.

After playing my roommates 360 last year I got myself a PS3 this spring.

The only thing I like more about the 360 is the ability to play music from an ipod etc. during game play.

I hate that Sony hasn't implemented that into the PS3.

I've got a 360 right now and I can't believe how poorly it is constructed -- many little glitches and issues.

The 360 seems to have better games right now, but I would go with the superior construction of the PS3.

you have to get a tv first or you'll just prove my theory of CHEAPSKATES

    1. you said you have $2000 (that's alot of cash for a kid in college)
    2. you want to get a game system first (that's shows you want to have the new fancy stuff on the block)
    3. you don't want to get an HDTV

    CHEAP M$$TH@ SKATE!
save the embarrassment, buy the TV first. get a Vizio from Walmart for $500.

don't be a cheapskate, don't buy the BMW and live in the hood. move out of the hood first, then get the BMW.

    DONT BE A CHEAPSKATE

There is also Disgaea 3 coming out next month (my wallet is sad :(), although it is technically a SRPG and a bit niche...although I guess most of these games are pretty niche. At least they all have better-than-PS2 graphics though. ;)

I would add that I'd be surprised if most of the 360 jRPGs (outside of Mistwalkers games and maybe IU for some reason) didn't also show up on the PS3 at some point. A lot of uncertainty, which reminds me of Oblivion and BioShock...although this is starting to get a bit off-topic.

Well the OP did have interest in RPG's ;) The Sega PS3 SRPG Valkrie of the Battlefield / Valkyrie Chronicles looks promising. The PS3 is also getting an enhanced version of Eternal Sonata, but that may not be coming over.

Yeah, I just didn't want to start listing RPGs like Disgaea 3 if turns out he just likes Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, etc. Or if he doesn't even like jRPGs at all. Disgaea 3 would probably give him an heart attack in that case.

I am cautiously optimistic about Valkyrie Chronicles...well, it has already been released in Japan IIRC, so I guess I could read impressions, but I haven't had the chance to yet. It does seem pretty interesting. I've given up on ES though, regardless of whether it comes out in the US or not.

I don't really understand this line of reasoning that is being perpetuated throughout this thread.

I recently purchased a PS3 and don't have an HDTV. While I would eventually like to get an HDTV, the only strong reasons I currently have for wanting one would be to increase the resolution in my videogames and to watch sports in high-def. I just don't see how an HDTV is a prerequisite for getting a PS3/Xbox360 as many posters in this thread are making it out to be. If I only have the money for an HDTV or a gaming system, I'm going with the gaming system first, then saving up and purchasing the HDTV later. Why drop $500-$1000 on the TV right away when you can have just as much fun playing games on an SDTV?

Can someone explain this to me?

Despite Son'ys "Microsoft Arrogant Big Brother" approach to this generation of consoles, I am 100% on board with the PS3.

They've got the games I want to play: Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Resistance, inFAMOUS, God of War 3, and Jak: Lost Frontier. Brutal Legend is out on both consoles as is GTA4 and Bioshock.

The online gaming aspect and Blu-Ray are pretty minor to me, but also being able to play my entire PS1 and PS2 catalogs was essential.

    Now, for the OP:

You really just have to ask yourself what you want out of your system and what games most interest you. I'm in a similar boat to yourself in that the main games I play are NCAA Football and Madden. I will periodically sprinkle other games throughout the lifetime of my system, but those two sport games are my mainstays. For me, it came down to a few factors: exclusive games, backwards compatibility, the future of the system as it relates to blu-ray compatibility, and free online play.

    1. Exclusive games: I played the Metal Gear Solid games and Final Fantasy games in high school, and seeing previews for their respective PS3 versions made me lean strongly toward wanting to play those games on a new system. The other big game I wanted to play at the moment was GTA4, but this game is available for both systems. So, because I play so few non-sport games every year, and the PS3 had exclusive rights to a few of those games, that put down a positive mark in PS3's side for me.

    2. Backwards compatibility: Because of the fact that I don't play many non-sports games each year, I still had some PS2 games heldover that I hadn't had a chance to play through yet (some of the old FF games, GTA:SA, and MGS3 - I rarely played anything outside of sports games with my friends when I was in undergrad, so I'm pretty backlogged). I wanted to have the option to continue to play those games in case my old PS2 bit the dust. While this was not a major factor in my choice of console (it was more of a factor when deciding WHICH PS3 system I wanted when I finally decided on the PS3), it was still a slight positive.

    3. Future of the system via blu-ray: While being a blu-ray player wasn't a big selling point for me at this present time (I was actually more excited about using it for a regular DVD player in my room), the prospects for getting use out of blu-ray in the future were intriguing to me. It's nice for me to have the option to watch blu-ray movies in the future on a great blu-ray player. I was also very intrigued as to how the use of blu-ray related to games, since games are getting bigger and bigger and thus use up increasingly more storage space. After seeing that certain games were planning on using close to, if not all of, the storage space on a blu-ray disc (which is much greater than the standard DVDs that Xbox360 uses), I knew that there may be something to having a system that makes use of the greater storage medium.

    4. Free online: Pretty simple, really. I'm a poor student right now and I only play a small handful of games. Spending an extra $300 or so dollars over the course of the system to get online capability on the Xbox360 for only a handful of games didn't make much sense to me. Your mileage may vary, and the 360's online network is superb compared to Playstation's, but since I'm not a huge gamer, the idea of spending an additional $50 each year for online access wasn't something I was too keen on.

Those are just the main factors that contributed to me getting a PS3. I have nothing against 360s, I enjoy playing them, and think some of their exclusive games are awesome. It's just that the PS3 fit more of what was important to me.

Let us know what you ultimately decide on buying.

You can have the same fun. But take NCAA 08 PS3 vs NCAA 08 PS2. If you play those games both in SD the difference in graphical quality would be... PS3 is 15% better, thats just my random number. But I have seen NCAA 08 PS3 in SD, it looks like a PS2 game. Play it in HD and not only does it look a lot better, giving you a true "next gen" experience, you also get a widescreen to view your receivers.

Resistance is a completely different game in SD. You can't see your surroundings very well, things look grainy and jaggy.

And I can't stress this enough. Its important as hell.
    FREE ONLINE!
Also Sony is down with all kinds of 3rd party software, its an open system. Microsoft makes you buy their bloated in price hardware. Did I already mention that? I need a nap.

I went to a friend's place to play COD4 with him and couldn't believe how terrible the game looked on his old SDTV. Granted, I'm used to playing on a large HD set, but it really did make the game harder to play and was certainly not as fun.

There's a difference, because while you did not have enough money to buy a system and an HDTV. The OP does. He just does not want to buy an HDTV.

BUY THE HDTV!!!! It will make your gaming experience 4456465464656x better. Trust me. Regardless of what system you get, the HDTV should be the number one priority. I recently bought one (35 inches) for about $450 and it was at Circuit City. So, there are very good deals out there. My main TV, the 50 inch, was only about $850 and this was from Best Buy. Both are good quality. Just do some digging :D

I agree with the TV route first before the PS3 unless you have a PC monitor that can support up to 720p minimum at the moment then you can hold off on the big TV purchase :). Most 22" and up monitors will play 720p or higher.

If you get the TV first and the ps3 2nd you'll be on your PS3 for days playing games and watching movies.

But is SF2 any less fun than SF2HD?
