Hmm...I think they updated the video player for videos off the HDD. They added the options you get from watching DVDs. I read something about them adding the same upscaling algorithms to HDD videos that they use for DVD movies in this firmware update. I remember this being discussed in some previous thread, and I wondered if perhaps HDD videos were treated differently than video from a DVD. It seems that was the case, although that's no longer the case now.
haha Cancun is ****ing awesome right now. **** UPDATE 2.40! for those that were able to download it before it got shut down.. how is it?
There's not really much to it now IMO. The in-game XMB is nice I guess, but until more games support trophies and custom soundtracks, those things don't really matter right now. I do like the interface for trophies though. Playing Super Stardust HD again to test out trophies made me remember how fun the game was. I think I might pay the extra $5 for the expansion that I never got.
There were reports that is was bricking consoles, so I guess Sony wanted to take it down and make sure there wasn't any problems with the firmware update. It seems pretty rare and it is fixable (w/o even send it back to Sony), but better to be safe than sorry I guess. I might be able to give you guys a link to download it, although if I were you, I'd probably just wait until Sony re-releases it themselves to be on the safe side. Probably won't take too long, and it isn't like 2.4 offers that much anyways at the moment (as I said, wait until other games get patched).
I downloaded it just fine and no problems. The XMB while in game takes a while longer to load, but it's nothing and probably expected.

I somehow got pretty lucky (on easy ) and got some of the harder trophies for SSHD. Still missing a few, but it looks like I'll have to get the expansion to get the rest...assuming I feel like getting them all.
I don't know if I can personally check to make sure, but I think 2.40 is available again for those of you that didn't get it the first time.
I'm starting to think that what I read online was not true, and the firmware is not back up. I read some people say it wasn't up for them right away, but I figured it might take some time for their PS3s to recognize that a new update was available. It still seems like people can't update yet though, which doesn't seem right (unless the update isn't available everywhere for some reason). Sorry about that.
Supposedly, the new firmware has been bricking PS3s. That's the reason Sony pulled the firmware for a bit. I haven't checked to see if it's back up though
anyone have any problems with the firmware update? Is in-game messaging available for madden 08 or nba2k8?
they didnt work. i update through computer all the time and have a flash drive just for it. it didn't work i have the ps3 folder and update folder .. etc
Not sure what to tell you. I took those links from NeoGAF, and it seems like several people were able to update fine with them. At least one person updated after I made the post here too IIRC. All I can tell you is just to double-check that the folders were correct (everything capitalized, correct layout, etc), and read of the directions one more time or something.
yep, everything seems fine. PS3 as the folder inside the usb drive then inside the ps3 folder make a folder called UPDATE right? thats the way i always do it.
Yeah, sounds right. Whenever you pick "update by storage device" (or whatever it is called), it should pick it up. I wish I could double-check it myself, but I don't think it will do any good. I tried it with an older firmware update that I left on my USB drive, but it just says there was no applicable data on the USB drive. If nothing else, just have some patience and wait for Sony to re-release it. I guess the in-game XMB could be nice, but there really isn't much to the other features (especially since they took down the SSHD patch that enabled trophies).
yeah thats the message im getting right now "no applicable data found" I'm about to try it on a memory stick duo
