To those of you who want PS2 BC: did you get rid of your old PS2s or something? I've had mine for years and still play it. When I get a PS3, it'll be hooked up via HDMI while my PS2 will be hooked up to the same TV via the RCAs, so what's the big deal?

They also make component cables for the PS2 which you can order online, allowing for higher resolution in the games that allow you to do so. God of War allows for progressive scan, for example.

Do PS2 games look better on BC PS3s or something? What am I missing on why this is such a big deal to some of you?

Interesting. I read someone theorizing that the reason is because Sony was unhappy with certain companies buying larger quantities of PS3 for use in power computer. Or something like that.

I tend to agree with you on this for a couple reasons. The main two reasons being the size of PS2 games (bandwidth costs) and the length of this generation (Sony has barely scratched the surface of decent PS1 games and people expect us to get PS2 games digitally in the near future?!). I think the more likely scenario, if we get emulation at all, will be Sony simply charging for the emulation software via a PS Store download. Then again, this is where Sony's stance on "Play PS3 games, not PS2 games" could come into play because by the time emulation software would be released, I imagine PS2 games probably won't be widely available in retail stores (i.e. only used games = no $ for Sony).

Certainly interesting to speculate on all this, but I'm still just hoping for certain PS1 games to be released, haha. I'll die happy if I can get the good Squaresoft PS1 games on the PSN. Plus, I have a 60GB, so as long as that keeps ticking, I'm happy as far as BC is concerned.

The best answer is usually the most obvious: people don't want to go through all the hassle of having a second machine if they got rid of their PS2 (or never even owned one in the first place). Some people would rather sit across the room and use their wireless PS3 controller with their PS2 games. Plus, the PS3 offers upscaling for PS1 and PS2 titles.

Speaking for myself: I have a 60GB (plays PS2 games) in my room, and a fat PS2 in my living room. However, I never play PS2 games on my fat PS2 because it uses physical memory cards while the PS3 uses virtual memory cards. I want to be able to play on either TV instead of being locked into just one when I start a game. My PS2 also only has a wired controller and my couch is too far from my entertainment center for it to stretch. Personally, I'd like to upgrade that fat PS2 to a slim PS3, but don't want to until I see if BC is coming back. If not, I may just consider buying a 360 for that room.

Weren't your saved game files originally on the PS2 memory cards anyway? Did you start over your old PS2 games on the PS3?

Wireless PS2 controllers are pretty cheap, too.

Personally, I'd much rather them drop the price than worry about BC, but that's just me.

But the upscaling would certainly be nice. How much better do PS2 games look? So much better that upscaling alone makes BC worth it?

    I'll tell you.

I got $60 from the PS2 I had which I sold in a garage sale after no one in their right ClutchFans mind wanted it. I had two controllers for it (they won't work with PS3 unless you buy an adapter), a steering wheel, lots of games, memory cards, and a remote control. I purchased a PS3 from Mr. moestavern19 right away as I knew I couldn't get compatibility from the newer releases of the PS3 versions out there now.

Now I have a PS3 and am enjoying the following:
    1. no need to use up an input from the PS2 on the TV
    2. no need for an additional power outlet used from the PS2
    3. use of one network cable for the PS3 as compared to 2 for PS2 also
    4. use of 2 controllers instead of 4, and
    5. the two controllers from the PS2 would show their cabling while the PS3s' won't.
    6. using less space on my entertainment center or stand by an additional console
    7. don't have to figure out which games go where if someone else uses my system in my house (my daughters play on it a lot more with Disney's Sing It©)
There are many more reasons to have backwards compatibility over owning 2 consoles, but I can't think of them right now because I'm sleepy. There's no BIG DEAL as you call it, but it's much nicer not to have a PS2 and a PS3 if the PS3 can play both consoles' games.

The only game with which I have problems from PS2 is Tekken Tag Tournament, which plays very slowly and is easy to beat because you can tell the CPU's moves a few seconds before it does them. No, I didn't transfer all my games. I had about 95% complete on Gran Turismo 4 but I just moved to the PS3. The PS3 plays Blu-rays and DVDs and the DVDs look awesome in its upscaling mode.

Fair enough. I just couldn't justify the price for the PS3, which I'm sure would be different if I had the money, of course. Much easier now with the price drop.

    Okay I'll shut up now.

    :D

No need to shut up about it, dude. Should you need compatibility, just write a nasty letter to Sony Computer Entertainment of America letting them know we bullied you into believing our preaching and that they should include backwards compatibility in ALL that they make.

That is true, but I don't think they would have just realized that recently. Obviously something they would have thought about before supporting that feature.

Wouldn't doubt If maybe there was a security flaw involved with the feature, and Sony wanted to kill it before anyone took advantage of it.

Either way, I doubt his explanation is really why they dropped the feature.

You can get an adapter that will let you transfer your PS2 saves to the PS3.

Not very much IIRC. Then again, I'm used to the enhancements that some PC emulators offer.

In fact, as much as I'm complaining about PS2 BC (although I think I'd prefer a lower price too), I'll probably eventually migrate over to using a PC emulator for PS2 games, assuming compatibility improves....and my PC can handle it. Then again, if Sony does let you download PS2 games, then I guess it would be hard to give up completely on their emulator.

I wonder if there's some mixing up of cause and effect here that they're not accounting for too well.

For example, myself. Starting in about 5th grade I played basketball for several hours every single day. Later I also started running 5-10 miles a day. Then I hurt my back playing basketball, and kept re-injuring it over and over and over. That got me to where I am today, where I can't play basketball at all or run anymore. I'm in constant low-level pain every moment of my life (and of course it gets worse if I run or anything like that), and there's nothing I can do about it besides back surgery, which I've been advised to wait awhile for.

So, since I couldn't run or play basketball anymore, I started playing videogames a lot more. And I get the impression this study would simply file me as "adult male, slightly more depressed than average adult male." Well, uh, yeah. I'm not even 30 yet and my biggest passion (playing basketball) has been taken from me. Must be the videogames that did it. Right.

lol. I knew that article would piss people off. Don't take it too seriously - I was primarily just being an ass. :D

I wish I still had time to play video games. *sigh*

Aren't the majority of Americans overweight? And I don't know specific numbers, but I imagine a significant portion of Americans suffer from depression. So, that article doesn't seem that revealing to me.

While I would have loved to pay less and like the slimmer, more energy efficient model better, I am really glad I bought the original PS3, which has BC built in. My older collection far dwarfs my small collection of PS3 games.

That's a flawed study that doesn't sample any children that play video games (the minimum age surveyed was 19).

It's also skewed because they only sampled from Seattle, which its constant rainy environment can lead to higher levels of depression and lack of exercise.
