I believe that a great majority of PS3 buyers know about the value adding features of the PS3. However, I think a significant portion of casual consumers don't really know the differences between the systems. It's an important distinction because those casual consumers will purchase other systems based on retail price and popularity/hype. Sony obviously wants to capture those consumers and turn them into PS3 buyers.

Now that Sony is on more even ground price-wise with the other consoles, it's their chance to differentiate their product based on features. Now the casual consumer goes into the store to buy a Xmas present for their kid and sees three consoles priced at $250, $299, and $299. Ask the casual consumer what the differences between a $299 Xbox 360 and a $299 PS3 are and they probably won't have a very good answer.

Sony needs to market the PS3 in a way that reaches the casual consumer and communicates the positive features the PS3 has that differentiates it from the other systems. They haven't done a good job of that so far. I agree with you that the casual consumer doesn't read value charts, so Sony needs to use marketing tools that will actually reach the casual consumer. With the price drop, now is their chance to really do that. Whereas before Sony had to try to justify the added value as a reason to pay a higher price, now they can use them as a reason to purchase one over the other without regards to price. I think that requires a fundamental change in the way Sony markets their product, and to who it markets its product to.

Well... usually most of the people that I know know me as a tech nerd and someone who's able to find deals.... so they usually just come to me asking me.. Usually it's family and friends.. sometimes it's friend's of friends.. No old people.. Women yes... Sometimes I tell them website where they can look.. (really depends on the kind of TV, the manufacturer... all that stuff.. know tons of websites) and sometimes if I have time, I do it for them. I usually tell them what to look for also... but if I'm the one researching it.. they'll get a good tv.

Stop acting like a smart ass.... it isn't very hard....

Maybe in your "ghetto" society Tinman.. they're all dumb idiots who don't know what to look for in a TV.

You can probably find some old PS3s going on sale with the release of the new PS3 Slim (need to clear out stock). Just found this right now (apparently ~$250 with some coupons):

Haven't had a chance to really digest all the news yet, so I'll comment more on this later.

well welcome to the Ghetto dude.

do you know why Vizio sells so many tvs?
answer: they sell them at Walmart.

I'm not saying people don't know how to buy a tv, its that they don't know how to setup them up correctly or even get hd correctly.

here's one for you, mr genius. a real situation.

A friend has a ps3 hooked up with HDMI to his 1080p bravia tv, when he tries watch a bluray, he can't get a picture.

    what is the problem?

oh.. by the way. I'm IN THE BUSINESS. you can research all the threads.

I might have missed something, but I think everything is pretty much the same. They're removing the ability to Install an Other OS for some reason (another potentially awesome feature Sony never did anything about), but I think that's about it. It also has some additional feature that allows it to sync up with Bravia TVs (at least, I think it is unique to the PS3 Slim).

OK, had some time to review things.

Slim doesn't really look that much different from the leaked screens. Never really liked the 'PS3' logo on the "top" (or whatever you want to call it). In fact, I don't really like the look of the top in general. Everything else looks good to me though. Especially the fact that it is so much smaller. Probably holds up better to dust, fingerprints, etc., as well.

Somewhat impressed by the price cut as well. I knew the Slim should result in cost savings, but I sort of anticipated them releasing it at $399 (or maybe $350), and selling the old PS3s for cheaper until they went out of stock (maybe a price drop for the Slim by Spring 2010). HDD size is nice too. Probably wouldn't work out, but it would be nice to see an even cheaper PS3 ($250?) with a smaller HDD.

Of course, I personally don't plan on getting one anytime soon, if ever. I love my PS2 BC. Otherwise, I might be tempted by the smaller form factor...ugliness be damned.

OT, but since I saw something about this recently...

Don't most of the tournament groups use PS3s? Or at least EVO does I think (pretty sure they got a lot of SF fans). I think it is easier to use custom joysticks/gamepads or something like that.

I was just kidding with the video thing. Does it have something to do with the display settings in the PS3? The refresh rate or supported resolution?

It's good I'm not the only one who thinks the original PS3 looks a lot better.

It looks way better. But the better energy consumption is what interests me. Too bad there was a price cut on the regular PS3. I can't sell my current PS3 to get the slim. The only thing I've got going is the backward compatibility

    yes.

if you set the bluray at 1080p/24 and your tv can only handle 1080p/60, it won't display correctly a bluray movie.

you have to make sure your tv can handle that rate. all 120hz tvs can and some plasmas can handle.

yeah, there are more customizable controllers for PS3 or PS2.

i meant for online competition, I know many people with both systems and they prefer online competition on xboxlive.

did you pick up a copy yet? gamestop had them for $20 at one point.

I think I missed that sale...just like I missed the Dead Space (for PC) sale this past weekend. :(

I'm kind of playing PC games only at the moment (and I have a LOT of them). Otherwise I'd probably just get it now. Due to my backlog, I don't really want to get any games for >$30 unless I really, really think I'd enjoy it. Unfortunately, fighters aren't that high on my list, but I think I do want to play it (and some others) at some point.

How are you supposed to set up a TV? Where I live... there's people smart enough to know where to connect cables to what port and to be able to figure out that it doesn't work probably because they connected something wrong.

In your situation, it could be a number of things.... I can't just tell you just like that without actually looking at it...

I don't give a **** if you're in the business... that means nothing to me....

Of course, PS3 Slim might look better in other colors (white?). Didn't think about that originally.

Then again, new colors would probably be available only in Japan. SCEA doesn't seem to care much about that stuff...or bundles.

Yes, this is basically what I was alluding to. Those 'value' bullet point lists weren't going to mean anything as long as the system was that much higher than the competition. Sony did try to talk it up to justify why it had a higher price, and those were (mostly) valid reasons - but most people didn't care.

At the end of the day, the lists like the ones in this thread are nice and all, but ultimately meaningless. Those 'values' still existed back when the system was 400, 500 and 600 bucks and many people didn't bite. You may think that if Sony has put a few more commercials out there that talked about the battery in the controller or the free PSN, etc. etc. it might have made a big difference. IMO, it wouldn't have mattered much. The masses want to see the price tag first and then go from there.

And of course, as I said, that perceived 'value' can vary from person to person anyway.

In any case, now that the PS3 is finally priced competitively with the competition, I think they will see it reap more rewards.
