Yeah, it sounds like the people who relied on the stores or some sort of email newsletter ended up not getting any info about this. The EB/GS websites were updated Monday night with the info, but that was probably the only thing they did to get the word out (outside of some stores calling people about the info). I'm actually a little surprised at the size of the lines at some/most stores considering the short notice (as well as the form of the notice being the Internet). GameCrazy should be doing preorders as well, although I would guess that they won't get as many systems as EB/GS. Also keep in mind that EB/GS will still have online preorders, although those will most likely include forced bundles. Those can get pretty crazy (every launch game + every accessory + HDTV + system = $4K or so). Wal-mart and a few other stores might be doing something similar too...though IIRC, Wal-mart did have non-bundled 360 online preorders last year (although it was offered for only a limited time).
I meant to add this before: I got an email about the pre-orders on Monday night about 6:30 but I didn't check my mail until about 9:30. I didn't mention it here because the pre-order rumor had already been confirmed. I got an email on my work account on Tuesday morning about 11:30 a.m. (a little late).
Kind of OT, but I thought this was funny: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009VXAM0/104-1569298-8058335. I'd say it is 99% likely that this was just a typo (or, as someone else put it, maybe they thought $599 was a typo ). If you look further down the page, Amazon also says the release date in November 19th, even though the text I quoted says November 17th, so it appears as though Amazon doesn't proofread these things before posting them. In any case, I'm guessing there will be a bunch of people thinking it is true anyway, and maybe we'll get a bunch of articles on Gamespot, IGN, 1UP, etc. Funny how much a typo can affect things. It would be nice if Sony dropped the price here like they did in Japan though (those prices are somewhat like the drop they got in Japan). Not that it would really help them, at least early on, but it isn't like it would really help in Japan either (again, at least not early on). That thing still irks me a little bit.
I think its crazily surprising! Its a work/school day, no announcement outside of the worldwideweb, and BAM. Lines everywhere by 6am. Took me completely off guard.
It's not surprising at all. It's still the Playstation brand, and on top of that I think a lot of folks see $$$ after how much 360s were going on Ebay. I know a few of the managers in south houston; they had some early risers and of course all of them sold out of their small allocations pretty quickly. The funniest thing, though? Both of the managers I talked to said they'd never seen most of the people who'd preordered in their store before.
i never get a flashy new toy until i see what it can do...then i evaluate in what ways it can better my life...for example can it record dvr, connect to the internet, make belgium waffles, or charge my phone..im a smart consumer..all those economics classes in community college really payed off.
Not sure, but it says this on Gamestop's website: Reading that, I would assume that either all stores already went through their allocated amount, or all stores (even those that didn't go through their allocated amount) have quit taking preorders.
Best Buy said they weren't doing the pre-order thing, so I guess folks will just spend the night in front of the store to get one?
you know the whole irony of the ps3, its got games in 1080p and many people who will buy it wont have 1080p tvs. i only hope god forgives them if they dare play ps3 on an sdtv.
