You and me both. I've definitely been good on avoiding spoilers though. Anyways, IGN gave this game a fricken 10/10!! "Is it possible to give a game an 11? If so, this would be the game that would merit that score. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a title that exceeds all of the hype that was attached to the title." http://ps3.ign.com/articles/881/881472p1.html
This is the greatest game I have ever played. And I have played a LOT. Holy crap the graphics are frickin' incredible. I was almost blinded by the overall polish given to the looks. And not just the looks, the audio as well. Am I the only one who thinks the music of the game is superb? In all of the boss battles, the music is so well scripted that I actually got chills down my spine. Dolby Digital 7.1 sound FTW. Plus, the controls are actually excellent now, with easy switches between First Person and Third Person. The weapon selection and subsequent modification choices add variety to what should have been a straightforward idea of "Pick up gun. Point gun. Shoot gun." Not only that, but the cutscenes that everybody loves to hate are actually not that bad. Sure, some of them are long winded (I'm only at the end of Act 2, so I haven't seen the truly long ones yet), but they add so much to the story and do a wonderful job of teaching the gamer all about the MGS world. The new Octocamo suit is also a great innovation, and later unlocks also make the scenarios more epic than ever (trust me, you'll get to them). There's not just plain old sneaking missions too, there's other ones (can't spoil them for those who aren't there yet). This is the only game where I have played 10+ hours and still haven't found a flaw that is so glaring I can think of it off the top of my head. Peace, I'm going to bed and playing my head off tomorrow, just to find out what happens at the end.
It seems like NeoGAF has been pretty good at not posting spoilers without spoiler tags. I've been refreshing the page a lot, and I haven't really seen too many spoilers (if any) that were mistakenly not spoiler tagged. I've been pleasantly surprised about that. It is like every post in that thread mirrors the impressions given by Mr.TripleDouble, supastevefoo, stevesazninvazn, etc., which is crazy. I figured there would be someone playing it that would not enjoy it (or at least think it was not an amazing game), especially someone that knew nothing about MGS (the cutscenes would probably then seem boring and excessive). But I haven't even noticed that...yet. Guessing they'll be there at some point, but I'm just surprised they're not they already. Thanks for the impressions, but you're supposed to say, "This game sucks. Don't bother even playing it since it is just waste of time." That would make the wait easier for those of us that don't have the game. Your post reminds me that I regret not having a nice sound system. I could tell just by watching trailers or gameplay videos that this game would have amazing sound. I haven't really listened to many tracks, but I do agree that the music seems great. I hope you keep enjoying the game. BTW, it looks like MGS4 sold ~300K (almost 50/50 between the LE and regular edition) on its first day in Japan. This doesn't include bundles though AFAIK.
I got the LE yesterday but I still haven't played it. I was in the middle of MGS1 and decided I'd finish that before starting MGS4. I just got to the 2nd disc in MGS1. Approximately how much is left? I'm guessing around a good 2 hrs or so.
Dude 8 Eyes is freaking ridiculously hard. But it's got such a fun weird atmosphere to it, plus your creepy bird friend is useful.
I always cite 8 Eyes as the hardest game I've ever played. It gets a little easier if you have a 2nd player controlling the bird, but still... I'd like to know if ANYONE ever beat that game without cheat codes. The bird concept is awesome... too bad I can't think of any modern games that have thought to do something similar.
goddamnmit, it's been 24 hours since i've known about the $100 GC deal and i'm still contemplating about getting it and it's killing me. MGS are the only games that i absolutely love. i just don't want to throw down $400 bucks right now.
I don't know how well the game goes over CQC, but Gametrailers has a pretty nice video guide on how to use it: <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=35160"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=35160" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object>
If you don't buy MGS4, Konami will turn the MGS franchise over to Western developers just like Silent Hill. Imagine the next MGS looking like this:
Is there a way to pull the podcasts on to my computer? I want to listen to them, but not while I'm playing the game.
Banjo Kazooie? I know that r****ded bear had a bird or something. Regarding MGS4...I played it at a friend's house for a couple hours...I wasn't terribly impressed. For me it's been all downhill since MGS1 on PSX, one of my favorite games of all time... All of the levels I was playing were in the middle east and lots were on streets with lots of other soldiers around and tons of gunplay...very Call of Duty-ish but not exactly what I was looking for from MGS. Maybe it'll get more traditional later... That Octo-Camo poo is badass. Also, does anyone else laugh at everything Old Snake says? His old man voice cracks me up so bad.
Out of curiosity, what did you like about MGS1 and what were the problems in MGS2 and MGS3 that made the series go downhill in your opinion? I really like MGS1, but I thought the series kept getting better and better, although I could see how some people might have not liked certain decisions with the other two games (EX: playing as mostly Raiden in MGS2). IIRC, there are 5 locations in the game. The other 2-3 locations I've seen are (minor spoilers if you want this to be a surprise I guess): Spoiler South America (jungles IIRC) and Europe. If you're a fan of MGS1, you'll probably like one of the other locations as well. I think it is one location per act since there are 5 acts IIRC, but I might be wrong (did you finish Act 1?). I guess I'll wait until I actually play it to be 100% sure, but I didn't really get a COD vibe watching gameplay videos (all of which were from early on in the game), although I admit the war-in-the-Middle-East part of the game doesn't help differentiate it as much as it could. I guess you could play it like COD if you want (run and gun, or whatever you want to call it), but I'm pretty sure you can still play it like a traditional MGS game (IOW, rarely shooting a gun or even being seen by others). I'm guessing you'll even be (greatly) rewarded for doing that, and even if you're not, you would probably get a great sense of accomplishment from sneaking around on a battlefield. Since you can play the game in so many different ways, it adds a lot to the replayability from what I understand. edit: Now that I think about it, some gameplay I saw involving the battle with the FROGs unit was maybe a bit like COD, especially with you working with a "squad." You can't really sneak out of that battle I would imagine, but this is a bit of a special case.
Is there a video out there that catches a person up with the MGS story? I only played halfway through the first one, saw others play the 2nd and 3rd, but I forgot everything. I just remember things getting weird. I'm not sure if I really have to play the others to enjoy MGS 4, but I'd like to be up to date with the storyline without having to play the other 3. PS- The PS3 is a GREAT machine. If it weren't for the better exclusive games, I would have regretted buying a 360 before the PS3. There's just so much stuff it can do: integrate with the PSP, web browsing, play blu-rays. I applaud the 360's marketing and contracts department for keeping it in the lead for this long.
Gametrailers.com has a retrospective for the series in 6 parts. The first 5 parts to me were for nostalgia purposes, while part 6 gives you the mgs timeline so i would recommend just watching 6 to catch you up.
Yeah, the retrospectives I've been posting from Gametrailers do a really good job of summing things up (especially part 6, as cdastros mentioned). Those guys do an amazing job with that feature. If you want more, I also posted that link to Youtube videos for every cutscene in all the games. Here it is again: http://uk.youtube.com/profile_play_list?user=Phoenix9215987 I also found this site that is pretty much the same, but you can download the videos as WMV files (slightly better quality I think): http://www.mgstruefans.aimbum.net/cutsceneindex.html If anyone knows of a site with better quality videos, please let me know about it. I actually watched all the cutscenes of MGS3 last night (partly to prepare me since apparently MGS3 events are pretty important in MGS4). I think I forgot how great that game was. I remembered some of the major points of the game, but I had forgotten some of the more subtle points of the game. Crazy how beautiful the game is even today.
Well, the first one was just so mind-blowing for me...that definitely helped. I just thought it was really fun. The story was out there, but believable. The story that started in MGS2 is really caused the nose dive for me. The plotline just became absurd. On top of that, I hated the Big Shell (and the boat) and thought they were rather lame locations. I actually didn't hate Raiden all that much, if at all. He had some sweet moves. But this game is what started the trend of ridiculous super-baddies. The bosses in MGS1 weren't TOO far out there, maybe with the exception of Psycho Mantis...now you have all of these weird creatures who can do just about anything through the magic of nanomachines. The third one I wasn't able to get into very much for a couple of reasons, but it didn't look terrible, really. But the story already went down a path I didn't care for, and I really dislike prequels for some reason. MGS1 had a deep plotline, but it wasn't overly complex or convoluted. The later titles in the series are like the game is trying to be bigger than itself and attempting way way too much. As an RPG fan, stories are pretty important to me, especially in a series like MGS which considers that one of the main facets of the game.
that's too bad, cause MGS 3 is the best out of the first three, even though it's a prequel MGS 2 I'll give you, is too convoluted
