G27 was on sale for under $200 a few days before GT5 came out (http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=5715072&postcount=42), which was when I snatched mine. I didn't think the wheel really mattered... until I drove on dirt. I have the Rennsport Wheelstand on backorder... but now all this cockpit talk is making me think otherwise! I'll have to do some research now...
Looks like I'm finally getting the game, friend is selling me a new unopened game for $30. Can't wait. Picking it up tomorrow.
My homemade cockpit was completed late Tuesday night, and last night I got to hook up the wheel set and use it for about 5 or 6 hours straight. I have only 3 words... Worth every penny.
Im jealous.. got any pics of your setup??? Also in your opinion do you think someone can use that wheel to learn how to drive a stick?? I know how to drive one but my girl wants to learn and I'm not going to let her mess up my new car and new clutch GT5 training sounds like the place the start. Does shifting and the clutch feel like the real thing??
I can take a pic next time I have it set up, which may or may not be tonight. As for learning how to drive a stick...that's tough to say. All three pedals have the proper resistance, and you have to time the shifter and clutch in order to avoid missing a gear, just like in real life...but that's really where the similarities end. The clutch pedal has resistance, but no "feel" of gripping the clutch like you do in a real car. Some time on a simulator would probably help her hand/foot coordination and give her a head start on learning on a real manual transmission, but I wouldn't call it a replacement.
thanks for the feedback.. Look forward to seeing your awesome setup and drooling... Think I'll have to pick it up .. sounds like learning the timing on when to shift will help when I show her on my car. hopefully I wont have to replace my clutch afterwards
i have the logitech g27 and waiting on the sr-2 cockpit from here http://www.sim-seats.com can't wait
10 pages deep and I've missed most of them. I've read online reviews but I trust my fellow Clutchfans more...what's the general consensus on GT5? I've played all of the games except for Prologue...so it's been a long time. I'm a huge racing sim fan and I had high hopes for this game. Does it deliver? I've heard some say things like, "We waited years for THIS?" Are they being to hard on this game? Does it blow away previous installments?
I just got a boner that can destroy the universe from watching that. How much do you think that whole set up right there runs? I am soooooooooooo getting that!
If you havent had any racing sims within the last couple years or so, definitely pick it up. Its a very good game...because expectations were higher doesnt mean its not worth a buy.
The steering wheel set he's using is a Logitech G27, which retails at $299.99, but he's made modifications (different wheel, custom paddle shifters, etc.) so I don't know exactly what the cost would be for that portion. The seat/frame is custom made and as far as I know he has not been willing to share his exact build plan. If I had to guess, I would say he's spent a few hundred dollars and quite a few weekend afternoons on it. If you bought everything you need (wheel, pedals, shifter, seat/frame) new online, it would be close to $700 or $800, depending on shipping costs. I got my wheel at more than retail because they are in extremely limited supply right now. The cost of my homemade cockpit was $45 in materials. So if you wait for demand on the G25/G27 wheels to go down, you could probably get a used one and build your own frame for a few hundred bucks total.
I'm gonna stick with the classic. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UGH3uG4gGI4?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UGH3uG4gGI4?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Here are the pics of my homemade setup. It looks a little funky right now because I didn't get a chance to paint it (damn rain), but it will eventually be black to match the wheel and shifter. From looking at the pictures one might think it's flimsy, but it's actually damn near rock solid. This is technically only half of the console, as my couch has proven to be a suitable substitute for the rather heavy seat I originally had attached to this thing. Fortunately, I designed it to come apart for easy storage and transport. The back half of the frame, with seat (from a boat...). unfortunately this was the half that actually got painted.
How much is this going to cost? You do know you can buy cars and do the racetrack thing for real, right?
