DTS HD can be 7.1, but most tracks tend to be 5.1. There's no direct correlation between the two though. DTS HD(as well as DTS HD-MA) is just an audio codec.

As for the Pioneer Elite, it did cost me a bundle. But it's been worth every penny. I have it hooked up to my PS3, HD DVR, Toshiba XA2 HD-DVD player, and Media Center PC. So it's basically in use 4-5 hours a day on average. I needed a kickass receiver that wouldn't crap out on me like previous ones(*cough* Integra *cough*).

I did a firmware update a couple of days ago so I'm assuming it was 2.30, but I'm not 100% sure...I did watch DieHard 4 last night and it was amazing...one of the few discs I have that has DTS-HD and works with my 7.1 system...I use it with my Onkyo 605...

The 2.30 update isn't available yet, so that was just the DTS core you were listening to. Imagine how great Die Soft 4 will sound after you do download 2.30.

As count_dough-ku pointed out, you didn't get the 2.30 firmware since it is not available yet. Sony's been putting out a lot of firmware updates here recently, so it is easy to get confused. The last two updates were released within weeks of each other IIRC, and this next one is coming only 2-3 weeks after the last one IIRC (so 3 updates in maybe 9 weeks or so it seems). It didn't help that they had gone months without an update prior to that.

The release schedule seems a bit inconsistent, but I guess I don't really care as long as we get new features.

I think the most recent update was for BD Live and resume play on DVDs.

    Correct.

On a side note, don't you wish everything in life was as easily upgradeable as the PS3? :D

I sent off for that five free Blu Ray movies offer back in late October. I just got them this earlier this week. Haven't opened them yet.

I got my PS3 the other day. Got the video working but can't figure out how to get it going through my sound card. Looks like I'll need to get a new sound card but I think I'm going to opt to get the Z-5500 and just go optical straight from the PS3 to the speakers. Researching the issue it seems like there is a lot of headache to get a PC soundcard working properly with the PS3.

Can't wait to put a 200GB hard drive in there :).

here is another question. since my system is brand new and there isn't much on the hard drive, when I replace it will i need to download the update again or will i need to clone the old hard drive to the new one? The PS3 OS is not stored on the hard drive is it?

    TIA

clone it, thats why 80 gb systems are really 74 gigs. The OS.
Yes, you'll need to update it. If you do that later it should be out on the official sony website so it'll be faster to update through a flash drive than on the network since many people are downloading at the same time.

I'm almost positive that there is some internal flash memory in the PS3 for the OS. I wouldn't think you would have to download the update again, but I might be wrong (haven't swapped out a HDD personally, so I might be missing/forgetting something).
