I use one of my old external hdd to transfer movies and tv shows I convert using ps3videoconverter (mpeg2 1080p 6144 kbps stereo/192 kbps profile) and the results are more than satisfying. Watching all the stuff i get from the internet in 65 inch widescreen goodness = worth buying/stealing a ps3.

Have you set it up for media sharing? If not right click on the Library tab and go to Media Sharing and make sure that its checked.

That's a really good idea. Sucks...I'm external is configured for a Mac (for school) but my computer with all my media is PC. I think there is software to make it work on the PC but I haven't looked into it. Is there a noticeable different in quality after you convert the video files?

TVersity has had yet another update:
Also, some tips for using TVersity (seemingly the best option out there at the moment I believe):
Credit to Kinan at NeoGAF. This is from the thread I posted a while back (he's still updating the first post with new info and useful tips).

yeah I did that, I also have tried several walk-thrus from playstation forum and this one. Now I have tried to give the ps3 an static ip, by logging into the Linksys but that didnt work....I see the ip of the ps3 address but as name for system it shows blank, now I see host names for laptops, and pc hooked, just not the ps3. Have tried with firewalls on and firewalls off...anybody else, have thier ps3 wired into the router instead of wireless ??

What were you looking for exactly? This is just a striped down version of the Linux version that is officially endorsed for the PS3. This is not something that you can just put on your ps3 for the Media Bar. This is an operating system (like XP,OSX,Vista).
When you boot up Linux on your ps3, you cannot play games. It's like the dual core macs that let you choose between booting up OSX or XP once you turn on the machine.

Linux is an open source operating system. Over the years random people have contributed to the design so Linux remains an evolving operating system with many different versions (Yellowdog being one of them). Linux is notoriously difficult to install. Yellowdog is one of the easier versions of Linux to install which led to it becoming the official partner of the PS3. RC can probably tell you a lot more since Linux is used a lot for software design.

I had mine plunged in directly for a while. Restore all your default settings on your router and make sure if there is a UPnP or DLNA setting, that it is turned on.

I noticed sometimes I needed to "search for media devices" in order for anything to be recognized. Make sure you go into the sharing settings for WMP and allow devices to connect to your comp. Don't worry if it tells you that isn't recommended. Try simple stuff like that. You don't need to go and set up the manual settings on our router. If it works for thousands of people with the auto settigns, it will work for you. There is just a problem with the settings on your computer or an option is activated on the router that shouldn't be .

I just went and got the Wireless Game Adapter WGA54AG, anyone else using this to make their ps3 wireless and do you all think that this will make the process any easier, or should I go ahead and return it to Best Buy

I had one of those for my ps2. My linksys is one room away and I'm on PSN and streaming from my comp - all wireless. I'd suggest the same thing Brando2101 did, reset your router. I was surprised at how easy the whole setup was with mine, pretty much right out of the box. When I set up streaming on WMP11 it didn't know it was a PS3 but it registered as an "Unknown Device". I allowed access and it still worked.

There is no such thing as a "game adapter". It is just a Ethernet bridge that can be used with any device with an ethernet port. They just call it that for marketing. It will not make any difference at all with your problem. The problem is with your computer sharing settings, not the connection. I would restore your router to factor defaults and set everything back up the way it was.

Ahh okay, thanks, I will try that when I get home, wont open the adapter....unless wireless is better than wired...my ps3 and computer are within 3 feet of each other, so thats no problem. Im thinking its my windows firewall or my zonealarm firewall...

If your hope is to stream video to the PS3 you don't want wireless. Wired transfers a lot faster so the video does not have to be compressed as much. I ran a 20 foot ethernet cord from my router to the ps3 and I can tell you there is a difference between wireless and wired. Even without video, wired makes the interface really fast: songs play as soon as you click on them.

I installed the latest version of TVversity on my desktop but the server won't start. I'm not sure if it is because I am running vista. ideas?

I stream to my home theater and I've found that wireless G is pretty spotty for some MPEG2 streams at standard def. I doubt it'd look as pretty to stream hi-def movies over wifi.

It's better to get a long ethernet cable.
