Well, again, I'm only speaking for the media server capabilities (DLNA actually does a lot more than that), but TwonkyMedia from TwonkyVision.com does this. If you go to slimdevices.com, I *believe* their Slim Server software is DLNA-compliant as well.

MythTV is PVR software that I *believe* is DLNA compliant, if you're looking for PVR capabilities. There are other products out there - once DLNA.org isn't getting bombarded like it is today, check it out.

Generally speaking, when products say they're DLNA compliant, it just means they can communicate amongst one another despite being made by different manufacturers. The only thing I care about is media server capabilities, though. :)

You mean the PS3s in Europe? Yeah, there should still be quite a few PS2 games that aren't compatible with the PS3 AFAIK (either unplayable or with some "noticeable" issues). US PS3s still have near-perfect BC AFAIK though.

Along with what DoD mentioned, it seems like TVersity should also work (and it is free I believe):

I'm sure we'll know more in the next few days when people start testing these out. Since the PS3 doesn't support all video formats (like divx), it would be nice if one of these is able to (efficiently) transcode those sort of formats to something the PS3 is able to play. Sony should work on getting those formats support at some point though, especially if they can get the PS3 to act as a media server as well...it kind of does that already with the PS3-PSP Remote Play actually. I guess you could access media from your PC on your PSP through your PS3?

Here are some pics showing off the new firmware features:

Here is a link to the most popular PS3 video converter. There are more out there but I can vouch for this one.

Considering media servers were around before Apple's iTV, then, no.

Seriously, in part, yes... but in more part, they're trying to keep up with XBox and its media extender capabilities.

This update is really exciting, I cant wait to have it installed. If that upscaler works with regular clips from the internet like the Yao/Olajuwon footage that would be incredible. I have been waiting on the upscaler update for awhile now, I don't own an upconvert player and am anxious to see the results.

The media streaming is pretty cool and opens some doors and untapped potential. But right now there is 3rd party software that creates PC access via the PS3 internet browser. The potential does give me butterflies though.

I think everyones' expectations for the upscaling are really unrealistic.

You have to remember that the content you are playing has some base quality. Pixels determine how sharp that content will be when it is projected onto a surface. There comes a point where the density of pixels becomes moot because the details in the base content is no longer varying.

I think you might see a difference from 480 to 720 but not 720 to 1080.

If your TV supports 1080i but not 1080p, it is better to upscale to 720p because progressive scanning will make more of a difference to the picture than the jump from 720 to 1080.

So the update went live a few hours ago. I thought about posting some comparisons to show off the upscaling, but I think it would be better to link to a NeoGAF thread with them instead:
    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158224
I might post some pics later though. Someone from the AVS forums noted how the DVD upscaling was "clearly superior" compared to his/her Denon 3930CI DVD player (a ~$1500 player that is regarded as one of the top upscaling DVD players from what I understand). Not sure if it that is really true, but whatever. BTW, this did fix the 720p Blu-ray playback which I mentioned earlier.

The media streaming sounds like it has some issues, at least to me. Maybe it just needs some more tweaking, but it seems like some people are having issues getting the PS3 to play any sort of media files. Even when they get it working, it seems like there are a number of formats that the PS3 doesn't recognize (no MP4 for some reason I believe, let alone WMV, AVI, DivX, Xvid, etc.). I might be judging this too soon though. This might get straightened out in the next day or so, when people figure out what software works best and how to setup everything correctly. While there are some people that are having issues, others are streaming videos, pictures and music from their PCs w/o any problems. It isn't easy to figure out how well this is working just by reading forum posts. :(

Also, apparently the European PS3s received better compatibility for PS1/PS2 games, although there are no official details on that at the moment (maybe Sony will update their online site soon).

Not sure if this is a Microsoft Media Center or just a Windows Media Player 11 thing, but if you go to click on Library in WMP and go to Media Sharing and then allow, your PS3 should recoginze it. Once your PS3 recognizes it go back to the computer and there should be a tab that says an unknown device is trying to get files. Click on allow and apply settings, restart your ps3. You should have all of your media files at your PS3's finger tips. Pretty sweet feature.

This will be amazing if it works right. The sharing on my WMP keeps crashing right now. (Probably because I just added 40k new files to the library!) I did have it working with much fewer files though. Now if you can remote play the PS3 with the PSP and have access to all the files on your computer via media sharing - WOW.

It works great. All my mp3s play but none of my video files : (
It will really suck to have to copy/convert all the stuff I want to watch on the tv.

It seems that this does work based on what I read at NeoGAF.

It sounds like people are starting to figure how to get the best results with the media streaming. It looks like Nero MediaHome might be the best software to try out:

This all sounds cool..i guess I'll find out how cool it is when I get my 3rd, yes 3rd PS3 system...

Constant video problems, horizontal lines, screen goes black, etc...ok, I'm done...yes, I still love my PS3, but why does it hurt me so...

That is really odd. I haven't heard any kind of pervasive hardware problem for the system. If you are using the component cables that have the 2 red plugs (one video, one audio) make sure you are putting the right one in the tv. If those are mixed up, you will get lines.
