Dang, you weren't kidding. I'm finding myself using the Solidarity paradigm even on trash just in a pinch. Spoiler I died several times to Raines before I started using Fang as a Sentinel. I have begun using Lightning/Fang/Hope, though I really miss Deshell and Deprotect from Vanille. I'd also love Haste from Sazh... grrr.
Yep. Sentinels are indispensable for survival from 11 onwards. I find myself dying regularly in normal fights if I fail to adequately prepare. I generally start out easier fights with a basic Commando/Ravager/Ravager setup, but any of the tougher ones are always Sentinel/Synergist/Medic. In a tough fight, literally the only time I don't have a Sentinel is when my opponent is staggered. Fang/Sazh/Vanille has been my party of choice.
I just got to Gran Pulse and did a couple of missions already. This is in my mind where the game really opens up and realizing the full potential  but yeah I almost exclusively use Fang in sentinel mode until I'm down to 1 enemy left. Some of these guys wandering around are very tough... Anyone figure out how to make it so that when I put Snow and Light in the same party, I can have Snow as Commando and Light as Rav? I can never get that and I always have to use Snow as ravager, and his magic is pitiful....
Uh, go to the "Paradigms" section in the menu and make it so? You can setup your own paradigms, you know.
Yea, that didn't work. Maybe I should've made myself clearer. Whenever I want to generate a Relentless Attack paradigm, Snow is always ravager and Light is always commando. I'd like the other way around.... making Snow the party leader doesn't work either.
Err, you can do that by setting up the paradigm correctly. If your party is, say, Lightning, Snow, Vanille (in that order), set your paradigm to be Ravager, Commando, Ravager. It works for me just file with Lightning/Fang/Hope, Fang being the Commando.
I did not know that I can manually assign roles, wow, I just kept using "Generate" like a dummy. Thanks
Anyone found the best weapon combos to use yet? I keep hearing that it's good to stick with one weapon for each character and just upgrade it.
I'm using balanced weapons for Lightning and Sazh (they starter weapons upgraded to lv 6, currently), magic-heavy weapons for Hope and Vanille, and strength-heavy weapons for Fang and Snow. They are cheaper to upgrade than the weapons I found later, so I just keep upgrade their initial weapons. I'm interested to hear what someone else has done though.
I decided to stick with the Gladius (now transformed to the second tier; high strength weapon) with Lightning, but I am regretting that choice as she's often set as a Ravager with Fang as the Commando. Then again, with Fang being a Sentinel more and more often, it might end up being the right choice anyway. I've been going with stats for now, not the added bonuses. With Hope, the high Magic weapon (Nintura, I think). Fang is also a high strength weapon (whatever she started with). Obviously, their roles determine what weapon I am upgrading for them since I am completely basing it off stats at this point.
Got FF13 for 15 dollars off with coupon + 5 dollars off sale at Toys R Us Ends today for anyone that's looking to get the game. Now I just need a PS3.
I just finished this game today...and I'll agree it's probably a 8.5-9.0 at best. The start of the game was pretty good..but my god...is it linear. I had to play 25 hours to get to the only non-linear part, ch.11 and after that it's back to the same song and dance. I was expecting at least one town in the game for you to visit/explore but there is NO towns. Zero, zip nada...disappointing. I was considering grinding for the gold to upgrade my weapons from tier 2 to tier 3...but I don't think I want to waste 10 hours of grinding just to upgrade 4 of my characters weapon to max. What's interesting is that ch.11 plays a lot like FF11....and there are 13 chapters to you guessed it, FF13. I think if they stuck with the traditional world map/towns/quests it would've been a better game w/ higher replay value.
So I rented this game from Blockbuster and got to chapter 9 before I had to return it. Before, I had only played FF7 way back in the day and a little of FF8 so I was a little curious to see if there was any cohesion amongst the previous games and this one. The game sort of throws you in the middle of the story right off the bat and I had no clue what was going on for the most part, so for awhile I was convinced that yea the previous games had something to do with the story. Then I started reading the datalog (something I pretty much never do in games) and realized that this game stands alone and reading the logs really helps explain whats going on. But anyways here's my thoughts on the game... The visuals/graphics are pretty amazing, I was blown away by them. Overall I think its a pretty good game but by the time I had to return the game I realized how straight forward the gameplay was. Because of auto-battle and librascoping your enemy, the computer will automatically fill out the chain of commands that will be the most effective. Because of this I spent most the game pushing X over and over again, just hammerring it even if it wasnt in use. The only time you really have to use your brain and some strategy is switching between the Paradigms, which is very important. Other than that though, you'll spend most of the game pushing X over and over again. Its actually a pretty good game to multitask when your fighting the scrubs...I was surfing the web with one hand and pushing X with the other until the battle was over
Pretty sure that's a big, disappointing "negative." It's a shame because the cut scenes are beautiful.
Yathzee Croshaw finally reviewed this game. He normally hates every game (except Psychonauts ), but he seems to particularly dislike this one. Yeah, tough to review it without really being familiar with the paradigm system. The battle system does suck until it's introduced and you become fully familiar with it. Tough to give a decent review while already hating JRPG's, too. But that's Yahtzee. Anyway, I finished it (sans the hardest 3 missions as they appear to require significantly more leveling than any other mission). I don't really have much desire to play it again. Like the battle system, loathe mostly everything else. I am pumped about Final Fantasy Versus XIII, though. Sounds like it will be... Less cartoony/fantasy-like, more realistic: Less linear: Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Versus_XIII Can't wait!
