I wonder if having a female as the focus hurts the story. X-2 you had a female as a central character, and I think it tended to be less popular. I felt connected to Cecil/Locke/Cloud/Squall. I even felt connected to the guy in Mystic Quest.
FF6 had a female lead...or two....or even none depending on who you talk to I guess. And it is one of my favorite FF games/stories (well, story wise it is probably only good due to nostalgia at this point). Don't think that is it, although I guess it could be an interesting thing to think about.
Story and characters stink but the gameplay and graphics look awesome. I can't wait to buy it after my SAT this Saturday.
Weird decision by Square Enix. They region-locked the English version to only American/European xbox360s. So I had to cancel my order since my xbox is Taiwan version. I'm not sure what their logic is. Because they basically lost a lot of customers like myself who are now forced to buy pirated version with the crack.
Seriously, I think (at least to where I'm at in the game) Vanille may be one of the most annoying characters in all of video games. She's like all the JRPG stereotype young female characters rolled into one (great for the creepy Anime fanboys), with a ****ty voice that seems to be trying to channel a few different accents at one time. They've got the JRPG grunting, sighing, ohing and ahhing that's so annoying in the voice acting in overdrive. It makes me want to stab my eardrums. And let's not even talk about her running animation. Hmm there are pros and cons to having a female lead. Pro -Like someone said to me in ffxi mmo, you get to stare at a female butt instead. con - If there's a love story, then you end up getting the dude.
I actually don't mind the character because she is so far over the top that I find it more amusing than annoying.
Haven't played it, so I can't say for sure. I'd probably lean towards no, even though it probably still is one of the best HD jRPGs. But there's always Versus 13! I'm probably more hyped for Demon's Souls 2...or possibly whatever Atlus' SMT/Persona team(s) is working on.
FF is probably the most polarizing series ever. SE tries to reinvent itself with every game and it's either a hit or miss with a certain group of ff fans. It's not like modern warfare which pretty much all their fans pretty much loves it.
I don't mind her. You can tell she's only being bubbly to keep the bad stuff from getting to her. I am assuming it will all come out and boil over eventually.
FF6 though there wasn't a main character. Sure you could consider Terra the central character, and it wasn't my favorite story, though It had the more memorable characters then most.
I don't think so. X-2 didn't do as well because it was a spinoff and was pretty different from a lot of the other games. Plus it was designed to be like Charlie's Angels. As far as Sazh, he is Jar Jar light. That doesn't mean I dislike him, I just wish they made him less of a clown/whiner. I have a feeling thought that it is an act and he will turn out to be cool like Auron was. Maybe thats just blind optimisim though. Who I don't like is Snow, man that guy annoys me. Just his design strikes me as very douchelike. So much so that I would switch him from my main party, but he is too useful. Vanille I'm ok with, she reminds me of Rikku all over again. I do have to say that all the characters seem to be clones from other games, mostly X. Even Lightning is a rip of Cloud so far. Fitting given their names I guess. I think that has more to do with lazy design than the series running out of options. Looking at XII, those characters were underdeveloped, but solid. That said, the combat is starting to develop and making it easier to play. The first couple of hours, I felt like I didn't even need to be there to get through it. Just push forward and go auto on battles.
FFVII Cloud or Advent Children Cloud? FFVII Cloud was cool. AC Cloud was trash. The way Lightning moves really pisses me off. She rolling jumps everything!!!!
Cloud was awesome. He was a little emo, but that was before there was a whole lame movement on that. At least in modern terms. I'm good with Lightning, especially since she punched Snow a few times.
Thank you for your well thought out and reasoned input. About halfway (I think) through chapter 7 and it's started to grow on me. I started out really disliking most of the characters (Hope = whiner, Vanille = vaguely Australian fanboy bait, etc.) but Snow isn't as bad as the previews made him sound, and Sazh is actually pretty good as a character once you find out why he's there. Even Lightning is starting to get a bit better, now that she starting to realize that the group of heavily armed fighters might actually be worth keeping instead of constantly trying to ditch them. Graphically, this is a beautiful game. The backdrops and all amazing, and the cutscenes are your usual FF quality, even the non-prerendered ones. Sound is also very good, although Vanille's VA is kind of all over the place with her voice, and Hope's whining continues to grate (although really his entire motivation is annoying and a bit of a stretch). The music is your typical sweeping orchestral score, and really lends some atmosphere to the battles. As to the gameplay, I don't really have a problem with the linear nature. Most of the time the "open ended" part of an RPG is just to grind levels, and you can still do that here. No real subquests, but the plot of the game makes it clear that these characters don't have the time or inclination to deviate from the main plot anyway. I like the Crystarium, but it kind of limits how you develop your characters. It's basically just a prettied up Sphere Grid from X anyway. As for the Paradigm system, it's probably grown on me the most. As your game progresses, forget the "Press A, win fight, move on". Right around chapter 3 or 4 they take the training wheels off, and you have to start paying attention. If you don't, you get a Game Over very quickly. You've got to know when to change your caster over to a medic, or your commando over to a Synergist or Saboteur to make the fight surviveable. All in all, not my favorite FF (that's still X), but definitely worth a try.
The combat system is really fun. Got to use my first summon today, and I think it's pretty awesome that you have the ability to control them now. It's also really nice to be able to retry a battle right after you die (which actually happens more often than one would think, at least for me). The paradigm shifts definitely make it more challenging/fun. I really don't get all the griping.
I bet you if FF13 was made from an American company...it'll be the game of the century, blah blah blah. Look at how hyped up Fable was...
