Whew... finally started playing this. The real test will come when I pick up FIFA 10 this week... which one will I play...? Meanwhile though, I'm having some difficulty figuring out for sure which class I want to play. I'm doing fine for myself with the Wanderer (beat the tutorial boss, got awhile into 1-1 before I needed to go to bed). But I'm wondering if I might want to switch to Knight before I get too far in. I tend to like the bigger weapons in melee situations... I like the idea of being able to mow people down. Even though it seems like the quickness of the Wanderer might actually be most effective for me.
Glad you got the show started. It really doesnt matter too much who you start with because, pretty quickly, you'll be able to upgrade your guy however youd like. What may be a weakness for him now can quickly turn into a strength. I started off with the knight...but his armor was so heavy for his strength, that I didnt feel as quick as I would have liked, so I took off his armor and replaced it with something much lighter. Now I can roll all over the place. And Im also big on magic, so my once full armored, sword fighting knight has now turned into a quick, magic firing wizard. So, my advice would be to just stick with it...you'll come across many cool melee weapons as you proceed and you can just upgrade your player in a fashion that suits your style.
Classes don't matter after a few hours. You can eventually distribute your stats however you like, use anything and learn any spell as long as you meet the requirement. You can roll very fast when you're only wearing less than 50% of your Equipment Weight, so if heavy armor isn't doing well, you can just take off a piece or two so you can be fast and agile again.
Ah, good to know, thanks for the tips. I'll keep that less than 50% number in mind. What do I do with this Grey Demon's soul I've got from the tutorial boss? Anything special, or do I just use it for souls? EDIT: Another question I forgot... can you ever lose items as a result of dying? Or are your souls the only thing at stake?
Keep it. You can eventually use it to make a Dozer Ax....which I guess is pretty good. Generally, you should keep all boss souls you get since you'll normally be able to use them to make special weapons or get powerful spells.
Nope. In fact, that is a (cheap?) way to get some items. If they're guarded by some tough enemy, if you can run in and grab it quickly, you get to keep it. Of course, you'll likely die 2-3 seconds later, but you'll still have the item. On a related note, any progress you make in a level (e.g., unlocking doors) will remain even when you die. So not as much backtracking required.
Haha... that's pretty awesome. I do LOVE the system they've got going of letting you go two-handed whenever you want to break through people's guard, which you already mentioned. That's totally ingenious. I haven't even tried dual-wielding yet, either, might be something I wanna try. Though I did buy that one shield from the blacksmith and upgraded it already, so I think that gives me 100% protection. I'll probably want to make good use of that most of the time. Do you generally find quick weapons or big ones to be more effective in this game? Or are they well-balanced enough to where you can't tell? I haven't found any big weapons to use yet, so I wouldn't know...
I prefer the quicker weapons, although I think they are balanced well. I got the Meat Cleaver recently (really strong sword), but I couldn't use it as effectively against the quick skeleton guards in 4-1. You can probably adapt to any weapon, but I think certain ones do well against certain enemies. The Meat Cleaver might be better against slower enemies.
Yeah, I prefer the quicker weapons as well. Although, I feel like slower, stronger weapons can be useful, it just depends on the enemy's strengths and weaknesses. Having said that, my quick weapons do well for me because I upgrade them and I enchant them, which makes them powerful at the same time.
I've upgraded my default Falchion already myself. I'm just wondering if it may behoove me to get a bigger weapon to crush through the occasional guard-happy enemy. Off to try Fifa 10. We'll see if that manages to draw me away from Demon's Souls at all.
Before you upgrade your Falchion too much, note that there is a pretty easy-to-get Crescent Falchion. If you're not familar with the adjectives, Crescent means it will do magic damage (based on your magic attribute IIRC) and provide MP regen. I'll spoiler tag the location in case you don't want to know about this... Spoiler In 4-1, a black skeleton is defending a Crescent Falchion near the beginning of the level. You have to kill/get by a bunch of skeletons near the beginning, but they're not too bad. You can get to this location by taking the left path when you get to the castle (if you trigger a trap that shoots arrows at you...you're going the right way). You can probably get a bunch of large swords pretty easily by beating bosses. I haven't really pursued any, and I have 3-4 large weapons IIRC. I actually did have to use one for the 2-3 boss (won't explain how/why). I got the Dragon Bone Smasher fortunately, or else it might have been a bit tougher. I forgot to mention this earlier, but dual-wielding doesn't seem as effective as maybe it should be. I tried it for a bit, but it didn't seem to work out. I seem to get that impression from other gamers too. The only real reason to do it is because it looks cool...and indeed it does. I think restricting your second weapon to only one attack type hurts (especially when it is a slower attack generally). Also, I don't think it was mentioned, but for anyone starting the game, make you sure you read up on Ostrava. There's a pretty bad bug involving him. Basically, don't save him in 1-2 unless you've beaten the boss, or will beat him before going back to Nexus IIRC. Otherwise, you'll have to save him every time, or he'll die. Or something like that anyway. I should have posted about that earlier, but I forgot about it. Atlus has also alerted gamers about this bug: http://atlus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4709
This game sounds really cool. I wish I had time to play it, but I'm booked up with Ratchet, Brutal Legend, and Uncharted 2 (which was really good). I'm debating whether to pick this or Fallout 3 up next year. Both sound like they will take a very, very long time to completely beat them. The online component sounds really awesome. I'm curious if y'all are playing logged into PSN. You get the hints and notes, but you also open yourself up to invasion.
I have Uncharted 2 being delivered tomorrow (geez, Amazon took their time). Hoping I can finish my first playthough of Demon's Souls and get to Uncharted 2 next week. It actually doesn't seem like that long of a game, especially for skilled players (maybe 20-25 hours for some, and less on subsequent playthroughs). There aren't really side-quests like in Fallout or other RPGs. But there's a lot of replay value in the game (e.g., finding rare items/enemies/spells/etc.), even when ignoring the online stuff. I was going to enable online play, but then I found out that this makes the world tendency stuff harder IIRC, so I decided to forgo it for my first playthrough. If you played Oblivion or any of the other TES games, I'd probably recommend Demon's Souls instead. Fallout 3 is great, although it is a bit like Oblivion with guns...not that this is a bad thing of course (I still really enjoyed it). But Demon's Souls seems a bit fresh compared to a lot of games out there.
hey rc cola or anyone else that knows a lot of ps3 games i was curious if you could reccomend the best 5 or 10 games for ps3 what would you suggest? i moved back to texas and sold my tv before i left so im finally getting one in about a week, along with a ps3. (getting a nice tv i might add ) anyways ive read through this thread and watched the trailer for it and im pretty set on getting it.
IMO, the must-have exclusives are Demon's Souls, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, and Valkyria Chronicles. The Ratchet & Clank games are also very entertaining. I also hear good things about inFamous and Metal Gear Solid 4, but I haven't played either yet myself. On the non-exclusive front: Burnout Paradise, Fallout 3, and Resident Evil 5 are all fantastic. Hmmm... thanks for the tip. I am past 1-1 now, so can I just take a stroll into 4-1 immediately?
I think the online component of Demons Souls is incredibly fresh and exciting. That moment when someone enters your game...wow. Talk about adrenaline rush. Of course, its not something that just happens all the time (since you cant get invaded when you are in soul form, which I happen to be about 95% of the time). Summoning someone into your game is pretty sweet too...teaming up can have its moments, specially when you play with others that know their stuff. But yeah, back to getting your game invaded....probably the biggest rush Ive had in quite some time with video games...its just a new feeling that Ive never experienced. RC, you should open it up during your 2nd playthrough, itll be a good time.
Yeah, thats what I did...I finished 1-1, then 4-1 was the 2nd level that I completed. My reason may have been a cheap one, but it definitely helped me out... Spoiler If you beat 4-1, you will get access to 4-2, which is a great way to rack up souls and upgrade your abilities. I did have a very difficult time with 4-1, spent many hours of frustration until I finally completed it. I may have been better off going to another level and finishing something else first, but, then again, its pretty obvious to me that you and RC are better suited for this type of game, so it may not be as difficult for you
When you attempt to loot anything that would put you over your Item Weight, you will DROP those items at your feet At this point you can lose the dropped item in two ways: 1. A Blue Phantom can pick up your Dropped item. (This is also how you can "trade" in this game) 2. You reset the zone (die or return to the nexus) without picking up the item and the item disappears forever. The bad thing about Dozer Axe is that it receives no additional damage from your stats. When you hit the Square button to display more info, you'll see some letters like D, C, etc next to the icons for stats. The higher the grade, the more bonus the weapon receives from that stat. Bring a club with you. Blunt weapons are the silver skeletons' weakness
Drexlerfan22 pretty much nailed this question. Pretty much all the x-1 levels are on the same difficulty tier, more or less. 4-1 probably isn't the easiest, but it isn't too bad. Plus, as dback816 said, bring a club and it should be a lot easier. Though I don't know if I'd recommend taking on the black skeletons. If you want the Crescent Falchion, you may have to use that trick I mentioned earlier (run and grab the item, die, keep the weapon). I was able to kill them by casting Soul Arrows from afar, but if you're a melee guy, it will be a bit tough. If he gets a clean hit on you, you're probably dead (or close to it). You might even be able to beat the boss, if you have some patience. His attacks are pretty easy to dodge, so it is just a matter of avoiding them. Of course, I still died plenty of times. Then at that point, you'd have access to 4-2, which, as rezdawg pointed out, is awesome for getting souls. Hmm...yeah, that doesn't seem all that great. BTW, good job of explaining the stat bonuses. I didn't realize how these stats worked early on, but it can be pretty important in deciding what weapons to use or what upgrade paths to take.
