Both. Items you get from enemies will be random. Maybe based on your luck, although I'm wondering if that actually only affects the drop rate and not what is dropped. Items scattered across the levels are always the same as far as I know. I thought I read something today about how the rapier allows you to attack with your shield still raised. If true, that gives you an idea of the different strategies with the weapons. Wish I knew this before. I actually had a rapier to start off with (Royalty class starts with one I think), but I didn't use it much (was just Soul Arrowing everything to death). Switched to a different sword before I started practicing my melee skills. edit: Don't know if this was in the earlier King's Fields games, but you can also hold single-handled weapons with two hands, which will increase your strength rating by 50%. Thought that was a pretty cool idea (probably done before by even other developers, but I don't see it much). You can also dual-wield, although I've heard that this isn't generally a good idea.
Everything you basically need to know about this game. If you're going to try to collect every weapon/spell in this game, good luck. You'll need to at least finish the game 2-3 times and farm the hell out of the rare ores. http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/intro
Hey now... that is cool, the one-handed weapon wielded 2-handed thing. That wasn't in King's Field. True, if it indeed does come out here. From what I understand it hasn't actually been confirmed.
First impression... "Um, okay. I just got raped." I'll be back for more impressions later. Nah, seriously though, its pretty obvious from the outset that if you arent serious about winning this thing, its not gonna happen. Its an intense battle...you have to be on your guard the whole time. There is no, "oh let me just walk around and see whats up"...If you are advancing forward, and you arent on your toes and fully aware, then you have no shot. Its that simple. Having said that, I think I need about 30 min before continuing...my heart needs to slow down and my blood pressure needs to chill out. Ive barely played, but this game has potential...its a shame this game was/is so under the radar.
Hehe...I actually remember thinking this exact same thing during one of my fights (think it was against the black Samurai skeleton in 4-1...not the one I could kill with Soul Arrows). On another note, I will say it is hard to pick attributes when leveling up in this game. I tend to somewhat ignore Luck and Faith (used for miracles...basically restorative spells like Heal). But it is hard for me to pick between the rest since they're all pretty useful (another aspect of good design). Actually been avoiding Dexterity a bit, but I think I need to put some more points into it. I didn't realize it was a factor for total damage with some (or all?) weapons, not to mention bows IIRC. Guess it would help if I tried to specialize, but I want to be the walking tank that moves quickly, hits hard, is deadly with a bow, can cast a bunch of spells, etc. Might get to that point sometime, but it is going to take a lot of souls. I haven't had much of chance to play in the last two days or so. But tonight, I think I have a few hours to give. Really looking forward to it.
So I have the Cling Ring...but I cant use it. Not sure what Im doing wrong. It would be nice to increase my HP right now.
That's strange. I don't think it has any sort of requirements to equip. It should be in the equipment menu. When you equip your armor, weapon, etc. At the bottom right, there's a place for rings, and you should be able to equip the ring to one of those two places. Don't know what to say if that doesn't work. Cling Ring is pretty useful in the game.
Ok, yeah, I had been going to the drop down menu for Rings...and you cant equip from there. You have to go to where the armor and weapons are. Could have helped...I just died. My dad calls me while Im playing. I figure Id call him back...he calls again...I pick up and as I pick up, I get ambushed and it was too hard for me to talk on the phone and play at the same time. So I died. My father basically killed me. F my life. Back to square 1 after dinner.
I think the game figured out I was trying to farm souls from 4-1. The "rare" enemy I was talking about earlier is now showing up all the time (he's right near the entrance too, right next to another enemy...so always possible for both of them to attack). Think I saw another one in the level too. This actually may be more due to a recent level up maybe, but it kind of confused me out because the "rare" enemy was showing up EVERY time. Oh well. I can now equip the Purple Flame Shield without hitting the 50% equipment burden limit, so I'm happy.
So I played a little after dinner and got to the boss at 1-1...I died, and in the process, used my only turpentine. Now, Im stuck with no turpentine and no firebombs. I really dont feel like going and finding it. Crap.
You dont have to use firebombs... i ran out as well and just wore down all the small guys until thtere werent enough left to bother me.
The rare enemy shows up because you have a -5 karma in that area. If you die 4/5 times or successfully kill 4-5 boss/mini bosses in that area w/o dieing you get +4/5 karma. Max karma = easier enemies, worst karma = harder enemies, but more xp/souls. In every area/stone, you'll need a max positive/negative karma to find the rare person to appear. You need max negative karma for these one type of enemies to appear that give you a rare item.
That's the world tendency stuff right? I was afraid of that. Hmm...trying to figure out how the black phantom skeletons showed up though. I did die once in body form, but I also killed Vanguard (think these canceled out). Guess I must have died another time in body form, which I can't remember.
So Im at the Nexus with ~8000 souls. Ive already upgraded the long sword to +2. I cant upgrade the sword anymore because I dont have anymore shards of Hardstone. I dont really know what to do with the souls...Id like to spend them so I dont risk dying and losing them as I move forward. But, there really isnt much I can do. Should I buy an axe? I think it may be too heavy for me and would slow me down. Should I repair all the parts of my armor? Costs 749 for each of the 4 parts. Or I could just buy 53 crescent moons. Edit: nm, saw where I can learn some magic and miracles...recommendations?
Man. I'm torn. This game sounds all kinds of awesome, but I know--based on my experience with Oblivion--that I will spend 20+ hours a week playing it, blow off friends, stop returning phone calls, grow a beard, rip through 17 bags of cheetos, and start using a bedpan. Must. Resist. Temptation.
rezdawg, You can buy more hardstones and sharpstones from a guy at the very beginning of 2-1. BTW, I'm assuming you know you can also use souls to level up? I didn't see you mention that.
Wow, did not know that...lol...Ive tried to limit my use of information from oustide sources (except from you guys). Ok, definitely need to level up. I was wondering what I needed to do in order to increase my attributes, but just didnt think I had reached that point to do so. Also, when you say the guy is at the beginning of 2-1, is it at a point where Im safe to get to him before getting blasted? Thanks RC. Edit: Just saw how to level up...youtube clip, lol. Thanks.
