I did read the thread, but down that road lies the death of all personal responsibility. People aren't guilty of murder, the gun company has enabled/created/encouraged their activities. People aren't guilty of speeding, the auto makers have enabled/created/encouraged their activities. People aren't responsible for being obese, the fast food companies have enabled/created/encouraged their activities. Etc. etc.

What about the personal responsibility of people who enable and profit from this kind of behavior? I'm talking about a narrow issue here - not some ultra wide ranging slippery slope argument edging into the tort system.

No one is enabling it. That is the point. Enabling would be providing a secure network where pedophiles can contact children without the chance of getting caught, or providing locations for children to meet with pedophiles. NAMBLA is enabling/encouraging the behavior. Dateline isn't running some secret operation that no one knows exists, they broadcast their operation on national television. Knowing that Dateline is doing this (some of the people on the show instantly recognize Chris Hanson and say they know what is happening), some of these perverts still choose to try to have sex with children. It isn't like the Dateline fakes are the only young teens in these chats. If the guys didn't go to meet with them, there is no reason to believe that they wouldn't go to meet with actual children.

That they are profiting from it is irrelevant to me. Are defense attorneys wrong for profiting from people that commit crimes? What about people that write books about serial killers? In the case of Dateline, they are not even capitalizing on the suffering of the victims and their families, because they get the people before there are victims.

LOL, so you're saying inquiry notice voids it all? Estoppel by entrapment? Novel.

You're talking about something totally different and don't seem to get what I'm saying so I don't know what else to say here other than that you should read the thread and try to focus on what I said before you start off on a tangent.

It isn't entrapment because they are simply providing an opportunity.

It is like the police stings where they have prostitutes walking the streets who aren't really prostitutes. It isn't entrapping anyone, it is just providing an opportunity.

And for the suicide guy.........sure, it's sad........

    but DON'T BE A PEDOPHILE!!!!!!!!

I don't see it as sad at all. I wish more would choose this fate since our legal syste, lets these guys off easy only for them to back on our streets again.

Child molesters/Rapist should get the death pealanty in alot of cases.

I have more sympathy for killers than I do for sick ****s who go after our kids.

i must not be communicating clearly, because i'm suggesting we should assume that for this conversation...and i think that makes what NBC is doing even worse if the TENDENCY to be attracted to children is something beyond these guys' control.

I used to do work for perverted justice, collecting info and other investigative work (never did any decoy work, wasn't my cup of tea). Most of you are completely wrong about the tactics used. This is how the decoys work:

    1) Create a profile as a pre-teen or early teen male or female, some use their real picture since they look young but are really mid 20s. They do not use sex driven names, they will use everyday names like JulieCat88 or MissPretty53 just random innocent chat names.

    2) They do NOT chat in private rooms or sex rooms, they only chat in public local rooms, example would be "Houston Chat". They do not IM anyone. They simply chat in the room about regular kid issues and after 10 minutes they usually have 5-10 IMs from males. Try it. You will be amazed at the filth who will IM you within seconds of you entering the chat room with a girls name.

    3) While in chat they never make the first move to talk about sex or pull them in. The predator is always the one who will begin the sex talk and the decoy is advised to act scared or ignorant of sex and the predator 9 times of 10 will go even further trying to lure the DECOYS to let them come over and be "friendly", not the other way around.

    4) After several days of chatting with the predator they will usually agree to talk on the phone (to get vocal confirmation that it was the person who typed). Those conversations never last more than a few minutes and no conversations actually take place, the decoys usually make up an excuse to get off the phone. So no they arent having phone sex with the predators or any type of lure.

    5) The predator is always the one who forces the issue about meeting in person, and we used to agree on a public place first, then stake out and see if their vehicle attempts to meet at that place. As always when we contact the predator again we give them an excuse to why we could not make it to the place.

    6) The final phase is what you see on dateline. They are not "lured" by the decoys they are lured by their sickness. With the 100s of potential pedophiles they come in contact only a few actually make the trip. If the decoys tried they could possibly lure the majority of the ones they come into contact with, but that would bring more legal trouble. The ones you see on dateline are the sickest of the sick who went out their way to meet up despite the decoy showing signs of being scared to meet strangers, of getting caught by their parents, etc...

The only problem I really have with the show would be if it was in my neighborhood. I agree that it's not a good thing to bring these pedophiles into a neighborhood.

Thank you for setting the record straight, MrRolo. I can't BELIEVE some of the trash that MadMax and others are spewing on this subject. How can anything that weakens the prosecution of pedophiles be a negative? Do you have kids, Max? A girl? Can you imagine how you'd feel if she was lured into a physical relationship with some 40 year old construction worker when she was 12?

They way you describe it, MrRolo, that's definetly not entrapment. Entrapment is when the police puts the person in a situation where they commit a crime, but they had no intent in doing so. Perverted Justice puts people in situations where they could commit a crime, but they do have the requisite intent. However, if it is argued that it is more of a disease, which I disagree with, then the mental state of intent is questionable.

I would rather have these guys being caught this way instead of the real way, where an actual minor is put in danger.

But I also tentatively agree, its not safe to bring these guys into neighborhoods where a hot pursuit could occur where police would have their guns drawn. Then again, how else are you going to catch these guys? I think its valid to require permission from the neighborhood, despite the common "not in my backyard" outlook that most people have. Maybe if PJ cased out a somewhat deserted neighborhood or an area where the chance of harm is decreased. However, you would hope that some communities out there would see the larger social benefits to let it happen, but its understandable if they don't want it in their neighborhood.

I think perhaps the publicity they provide the issue outweighs the slimyness of them profiting from it. It's such a disgusting and serious problem that I really don't have a problem with the media making money off of exposing these scumbags. How many people would still be trying to rape kids from online chats if not for the publicity?
