i could understand a "no jeans/t-shirt/jersey" rule, but to make them wear a suit w/ a sport coat seems over the top. i could totally understand if the sportcoat rule was for sitting out a game on the bench, but for off the court stuff it seems ridiculous.
For the money they make, I see very little room for complaint over something as insignificant as this. However, I sort of agree that they are taking it too far. When teams travel, they often end up doing it after the game. They arrive at their next destination from anywhere from midnight to 3 am. I know because I used to greet them when they arrived at their hotel. Now, if you just finished playing a game, do you really want to put a suit on to get on a bus, then a plane, then another bus, just to get to your hotel? It makes sense to me that they should have a dress code when they're in street clothes on the bench, but on their chartered buses and planes? Why? Oh well, I suppose in the end I don't give a damn. Doesn't have anything to do with watching the game.
Do most companies not pay for employee's business trips? Edit: Just to clarify, I think it's well within the NBA's right to ask players to put on a suit and tie in team functions, interivews and etc. However, when you broaden that rule to plane trips and hotels, it's going a little to far.
Remember, David Stern is a few years removed from talking about "hundred-time over millionaires like Russell Simmons wearing the same clothes our players wear," and all about how the hip-hop "culture" had prevaded all walks of life.
I don't think it is a good idea, let the players wear what they want.....most employers don't get to tell their employees what to wear in off hours. DD
How does this have anything to do with Ron Artest? Blame global warming, the Bush administration, FEMA, or some evil drug company. Stern is the CEO, if you will, of NBA basketball. I guess you are alluding to a desire to improve the image of NBA players, but laying this all at the feet of Ron Artest is a stretch. There are plenty of wife-beating thugs with long arrest records, drug problems, and bad attitudes in the NBA that you could blame moreso than Ron Artest.
i can too . . but i do not agree If your company changed the dress code tomorrow I think most folx would be put off about it Esp if it was far more stringent than they use too I'm serious . .. If tomorrow Employers demanded all women wear skirts . . .at least to mid calf .. no cleavage and little make All men must be in black suits with white shirts and a blue tie with black shoes then most folx would bristle a bit . . .. when u make change. . . you expect resistance also .. . I hate the. . I GOTTA DO IT .. SO SHOULD THEY mentality their job and our jobs are completely different If they are able to fight this successfully. . more power to them I we could change some things about our work place . . .we would anyone who says they wouldn't [and they ain't already the boss] is probably lying cannot be mad because they can effect change in their jobs whereas we cannot Rocket River . . this is not directed at you . . . . just general info
Stupid idea that's not gonna work. Stern is going to get hell from every single player out there if he actually tries to implement this.
What a dumb, un-American, idea. The NBA can tell them what they have to wear on the court, that should be the end of it. The rest has nothing to do with their job description or skills of the job (shoot, pass, rebound, defend).
I dont like this idea: They are wearing unifroms in his job times (during games) and they are rules in that time. In the time off job, they can wear whatever they want. And I dont think a fan pays a tickets to see a player wearing a suit during interviews.
To all the people who say they can wear what they want in their off time, No one is disputing that. The league just has a very different idea of their off time than you do. There is some evidence to suggest that the plane rides and hotel check-ins are not off time though. The players are required to be at those events at specific times and can be punished if they fail to be there on time (the Fancy/Superbowl incident anyone?). If the team is telling you where to be and when to be there, that is not really off time.
i say players should quit their b****in. i remember in school people would b**** about dress code. big deal, get over it cuz we couldnt do anything to change it. The nba players on the other hand get paid millions to play ball, the least they can do is dress decent, and if they dont like it? what? are they gonna strike? It will be AI by himself. AI needs to stop whining and act his age.
stern's an a-hole. yes some dress code might be legit if its players sitting on the bench/press conferences. but to require players to be wearing X during latenight flights is another manifestation of his a-hole-ness.
I think the players will get creative and it will piss Stern off what . .they will get fined for not having their shirt tucked in??? We Americans . .there are ways to be within the rules yet still be defiant Rocket River I can see AI in his TATTO SUIT . . a suit that looks like it is brown with a bunch of TATTOes on it
This is ridiculous. I'd like to meet someone who saw an NBA player at their hotel or on their way to their chartered plane who was upset by the fact some of the players didn't have a suit on. I'm sure there were tons of fans who saw Iverson at the hotel in a throwback jersey and were completely offended. I'd like to meet them so I could encourage them to get a life.
i can just see it.. customized suits in colors/design/prints/material that nobody have ever dreamed of or seen before..
I agree that players should look professional during game time and during media interview. But team flight and hotel is a bit too much. And I favor going back to shorty shorts on court. I hate those baggy pants.
