The medication Proscar (for prostate) and Propecia are the exact same thing. You can get a prescription for proscar, break it in half and take that instead of propecia. Proscar is probably 25% of the price (if not going through insurance) of propecia.
just checked..searched hair loss...hair and grandfather...hair and mother's father...and a few others...nothing turned up like that. but found this elsewhere: http://www.holyname.org/health_information_resources/health_manuals/Men/hairloss.htm What causes hair loss? Hair loss is believed to be primarily caused by a combination of: aging change in hormones illness family history of baldness burns trauma Generally, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become. Hair loss is not caused by: poor circulation to the scalp vitamin deficiencies dandruff excessive hat-wearing a gene passed on from an individual's maternal grandfather
I lost my hair when I was 22. Now at 30, I have nothing at all on top. Only the classic horseshoe pattern.
My hair started thinning when I was about 21....I'm almost 26 now and it's slowed down, but I think eventually I'll lose most of it. I tried the Rogaine for a while a few years back and it didnt seem to help. I still havent decided if I'm just going to shave it off sometime in the near future or try to do something about it.
If they don't have a cure for thinning hair or baldness in ten years, then I'm cracking skulls. I believe they are getting close using adult stem cells in testing in mice. I think their just really slow bringing it along. I'm not sure if they have even tried it in humans yet. I don't know how their gonna have this supply of stem cells to treat this cure but I guess they can harvest or grow them...whatever. I tried Propecia for thinning hair for about two years and, while it may have helped some, it wasn't enough for me to bother with it. Usually, people only grow less than one hundred hairs and/or keep the hair they have. Your supposed to peak at the two year mark and then it's kind of downhill from there. Honestly, I'm not sure if it was all psychological and I thought it was helping when it really wasn't...or what. At this point, I don't even give a sh*t. I stopped a few months ago and, while I may see a few more hairs around the sink on occassion(I think...), I don't feel I'm any worse off at this point. It's not like my hair filled out and thickened up when I was on the stuff. I didn't bother with rogaine cause I had a reaction(itchy scalp) to it and it's kind of expensive as well. I believe they have a better, less oily formula now but I don't care. So, screw it. I figure in ten years they should have a cure...whether it is implanting stem cells or whatever. Maybe I'll have a thick head of hair when that time comes...maybe I won't. If they don't have a cure, then I will have lost faith in those who work in this area. And, I'm cracking skulls. I'm just going to keep what hair I have and keep my hair pretty short via clipper cuts. I have coverage everywhere but I fit the male pattern baldness profile where thinning starts on the back top of the head. The thing is...I lost most of that hair in the span of a week for some unknown reason years ago(probably too much partying back in the day). While I may have lost a little here and there since, it was one day where I had some chunks of hair falling out where I was like "WTF!!!". LOL So, I'm going to take my chances and hope my remaining hair doesn't fall out so quickly. It's just the top and my sides are real thick so I guess I could transplant some hair from the sides if I wanted but...bleh. Then, the cure. I'm sure their gonna want to charge an arm and a leg for the cure treatment as well which I see being an out of pocket expense of course. I may just pay for the cure then rather than pay now and then. Toupee anyone? Hair thickening spray paint? Pubes? Bleh! The fact is so many people go through thinning or balding that it's pretty normal in society. How you want to handle it is another story? Shave your head, keep your hair short, treat it, or do nothing. If someone can't accept you because you have thinning or balding issues, then their not worth it and shallow in my book. I think the bigger issue is you accepting it yourself. But, for all you really, really, really good looking full headed hair people who feel your superior and can style their thick hair good...kiss my hairless ass(yes, that was a spin off quote from the movie Zoolander). - From Surfguy's daily memoires
Propecia doesn't help thinning at the temples, does it? I'm doing ok with regard to keeping my hair, but I also know that if problems are going to occur (like my cousins had), then I'm at the target age where it will start.
No...on its own...it doesn't. I don't think either Rogaine or Propecia claims to help balding at the temples. I know Propecia is for male pattern balding only and they have no proof that it has ever done anything for anywhere else on the head.
I definitely did NOT get that gene from my grandfather on my mother's side. He was bald at 19. My hair comes from my father's side because my dad, who is in his mid-60's, has all his hair and very few grays. My grandfather on his side had a nearly full head of hair at 94 when he died and still had to get hair cuts or his hair would grow long over his collar. All of my dad's brothers have really thick hair as well and wavy or curly just like mine. My mom's family all had really thin, straight hair and most of the men in her father's family were bald before they reached 30. Personally, if I were losing my hair, I'd shave that **** off. I have a friend who is going bald both in front and in back and I've been talking to him about shaving it down to about 1/8th of an inch. That looks so much better than trying to fix up the little you have. You aren't fooling anyone with that. Just shave it down and own that baldness.
