What a great ruling. Haven't had the chance to read it yet, but it sounds like it's pretty well-written and expertly written to withstand appeal at the district court and eventually Supreme Court.

Equality sometimes takes awhile, but it comes around eventually. This makes me proud to be an American. What a great day.

(i thought the original prognosis was that this case was a longshot...).

Prop 8 was first challenged in the California courts. I believe that case was more of a longshot, since it had more to do with Amendment law than the rights of individuals.

I don't know what the feeling was about the federal case, but I always assumed it had a much better chance.

thanks uolj...i was probably thinking of the California courts challenge.

Is this then just a precursor to a SC judgement on individual rights, state rights and voter rights? Seems to be a lot of potential legal philosophic ponderances here.

Couldn't this ruling aid in overturning other same-sex marriage bans across the country?

    If so: excellent.

....and I'll gladly thank the some-of-whom-were-surely-gay men who died, who gave that right to me....

No special treatment. Equal opportunity for ALL.

so, i applaud, as ever, the result. i fear however this will be overturned, and although i want this result, i'm not sure this is the way to get there, or will survive appeal.

Yeah, steadfastly supporting a party that openly and strongly oppose gay rights is probably a better way to achieve equality for all. Thanks for your input.

It has a very good shot of being upheld by the 9th circuit court. The Supreme Court on the other hand, will be tough. I guess the fate of gay marriage will be in Anthony Kennedy's hands.

    not quite.

Although I've changed my tone on gay marriage from full opposition to not really having a dog in the race, if this was about equal rights for all, why not make it 'for all' i.e. polygamists/bi-sexual group marriage?

seems like equal rights for just a few more. not all. Which....I guess is still a good thing.

Because polygamy is not a choice, all men are attracted to multiple woman at the same time. It's because of the evil space wizard. Until the evil space wizard is destroyed, we must lift this terrible ban.

Now women with multiple husbands, thats just sick. One man eight women, the way God intended it.

But, bisexual women are cool in my book.

Abortions and the death penalty for all!

You never had a dog in the race. Thinking you did was your first mistake.
