In my travels of Europe & Asia, its Houston.... usually followed by "we have a problem" because of the movie, NASA, etc. Its part of popular culture globally because of the whole "space race." Maybe space exploration still excites people I guess becauce its still such a mystery ...IDK. And that's why this kinda sucks. Houston to me, is really only known globally because of the events of Apollo 13 and that famous line, which I hear, over and over, in all sorts of crazy accents...it sounds utterly ridiculous sometimes. But what if Apollo 13 had never happened and the line was never said? How would this city be remembered if it was not for that famous line? BTW - this post gave me an idea. In the future, I'm gonna videotape everyone I meet abroad saying that famous "Houston, we have a problem" line ...in all their crazy accents. Think it might make for a great YouTube. Now as for Medical and Energy here - no one Ive encountered abroad ever thought of Houston because of Health Care or Energy ...unless they worked in those industries. Only then is it well-known. Now as for Dallas, honestly, I've have gotten a few Dallas ..."Who Shot JR" lines. But it was from older people as not many young-in's nowadays even remember the Dallas Soap Opera, let alone, were even born then. Times have changed and the memory and fame of the show is fading.... soon, it won't matter.
I can't speak as to the whole global thing, but within the US, it's definitely Dallas, and it's not even close.
I will agree in the US, its Dallas hands down mainly because of the Cowboys and either the love or hatred they draw from that person you ask. And slowly Mark Cuban is takin himself to those heights too, as his image and antics eclipse that of his team.
THIS!! Combined with the success of the Mavs and the Stars its Dallas. Overall when you take the Cowbitches away from Dallas you have.......nothing.
Have to agree that it's Dallas nationally, and Houston internationally, for all the reasons already sited: Dallas = Cowboys and to a lesser extent the Mavs and Stars. Houston = energy, business in general, and medicine.
I always heard Houston was better known world-wide cause of the whole space race mission control for every single flight thing. Also the med center is better known than you might think. Dallas is better known in the US for the Cowgirls...and for JR. Don't fool yourselves, Dallas is probably still in syndication somewhere in this world right now. The reach of that show was truely massive.
Dallas: The TV show and the Cowgirls. It's a cryin' shame, too. Dallas is the largest city in Oklahoma, every Texan knows that.
I agree with almost every post in here... but I want to clarify slightly: Dallas maybe a more prominent city, on the tip of more tounges in the US. But if you pose the question slightly differently, for instance, "Which city is more important or vital to the health of Texas?" the answer is clearly Houston. I'll put it this way... if Texas was a muscle car, Dallas would be the chrome fixtures, the hood ornament, the glossy paint job, etc. Houston would be the 5 liter V8 growling under the hood. Walking by this car, everyday Joes would talk about the cool design, clean lines, sweet rims... but people who know cars would say, "Wow, listen to that engine rev..."
As other posters have said its Dallas due to the show, Cowboys and Mark Cuban. A lot of people not from Texas are often surprised at how large Houston is.
Exactly...I'm from Houston, awesome city, tons of stuff to see and do, beautiful women and Dallas, sux...But from a person not from Texas, a lot of them remember the TV show Dallas and the Cowboys...
All the large Texas cities are going to hell, but I'd choose Dallas over Houston, because it's further inland, and better protected from hurricanes, and has a bit less humidity than Houston.
If that's the case why not Austin? Very similar feel to Denver and Portland, and the weather is better too.
Unfortunately it is Dallas. Hell, on a lot of digital maps of the US shown on television Houston isn't even marked until they zoom in on Texas. It is just Austin and Dallas.
