How much of the pie will be enough for them, and what do they propose once they get it all, since that's obviously the goal? How low would they stoop to get every last shred of business in every retail market?

Further, does their aim of eliminating all competition (basically spelled out in that article) not seem monopolistic, and thus anti-capitalist, and eventually anti-consumer? anti-employee? anti-America?

Lastly, how long before people as a whole begin to resent their business practices with rhetoric like this? TRYING to put other companies out of business to please shareholders? When all the Kmart employees are looking for jobs in a market that has newly limited opportunities thanks to this an other tactics, can they expect wages and benefits to improve, or even stay put? i doubt it.

Somewhat sick, when you think of the state the country's economy is in.

The fact that if they raise prices too much, other companies can jump right back in at any time? Learn economics please.

Wow, a business has a penultimate goal of defeating all of their business rivals. This is obviously a completely new phenomenon in capitalism.

I shop at Walmart about 1-2 times per month. Both of the Walmart stores that I shop at, one near my house, one on my commute, were remodeled like the articles said. I didn't notice that they looked nicer (both looked nice for Walmart before), but nothing was located logically. Example: Before, "men's" departments like hardware and sporting goods were located near each other. Now they are across the store from each other. I know the target for retail is women, and I'm not a woman, but to me this remodel was a negative.

I must admit the Walmart in New Territory in SL is probably the nicest Walmart I've ever seen. It looks like a Target.

But, I think I'll go an extra mile or so and shop at the Walmart on 59 then go to the one in Mo City. I don't know what the hell they are doing, but it is looking more horrendous each time I go there. The Pharmacy is literally in the middle of the store next to the grocery area and sticks out like a sore thumb. All the registers have been replaced with a bright sky blue color and stainless steel (reminds of Kmart for some reason). THEY TOOK OUT the self checkouts  and they just painted over the red brick exterior. It now looks brown. I'm pretty sure it wasn't always that color, but in any case it looks like a relic of the 80's now. Completely hideous...it's actually depressing and frustrating walking through that store.

Competition is healthy. Wal-mart is getting a little bit too big for my taste.

Walmart is by far my favorite store to get all of my shopping done at once. Having said that, thats funny right there!

To save a bit of money, we've turned the shopping experience into something almost as bad as getting a root canal. If you don't remember the days of small family owned business, i truly feel sorry for you, because they were a treat. Believe it or not, shopping use to be a relaxing experience.

Even going to the grocery store was a breeze. No lines, no waiting, terrific service, great deli food, all before major brands lowered the quality of their ingredients to increase profits.

And Walmart is parasitic, but I'll not harp on that point.

Hey, what you're describing still exists. I have proof:

Then you're too young to remember a better time. A time before HFCS was used as a food additive, a time before chocolate bars had an additive to ensure they didn't melt as quickly, a time before customer service sucked, a time before you had to push a dozen different buttons before you got to talk to a human voice, a time when an appliance would work ten years before breaking. And that's only the tip of the iceberg. Full service gas stations, pizzas that actually used high quality cheese, a time when fast food actually tasted good (yes, it's true). All gone, sadly, all gone.

I'm sure if you jumped into a time machine and went back to 1970 with an iphone in hand, a lot of people would think it is 2009 that has it good. Heck, they would be in awe if you told them about walmart ;)

I love me some walmart. If I need to just get food, I go to HEB, but if I need to a little of everything, its off to walmart. I'm suppose to get a meeting with the big wigs about a great idea and proposal. If it goes well, yall might see leebigez with a chunk of the action.

If Wal-mart really becomes "the only store in the neighborhood", then they certainly can price above market value without any ramifications. Sure, it may not be absurdly high prices, but they can definitely make it so consumers pay more than they'd have to if other retail chains are also around. After all, they can always just run a few sales if another store wants to get in.

Regardless of how Walmart's schemes are correct for a business and their stockholders, it will eventually suck for consumers.

    Dear Walmart,

Your store remodel means nothing to me when you still have only 3 out of 30 f***ing checkout lanes open. And please give me a legitimate reason why you took away the self-checkout lanes.
