That is the point. Should we offer 2-3% of the athletic sholarships to Asian as well since they are under represented in college sports?

Why should Asians be denied a chance to be successful based on the fact that as a group Asians really value education and tries hard to do well in school?

Equal opportunity needs to refocus onto disadvantaged backgrounds and off of race. Class and education is the cause. Race is a factor, but lingering racism leads to the class and education inequality, and THAT is what has to stop.

Simple race-dependent ideas are not going to help.

thats an excellent question. I think that the University of Michigan should be required to give 5% of its athletic scholarships to Asians since they are so into affirmative action :D

no its not, and this is exactly how i view these "affirmative action" programs. gear up some program for people of certain races? please this makes me sick. this institutions are suppose to be equal opportunity. every job application i have filled out always states "we are an equal opportunity blah blah blah, that fully supports affirmative action blah blah blah." what an oxymoron.

imagine if you are sick and needs surgery, you would probably mind it if your doctor was hired solely on the basis of fulfilling some bull**** quota ( i hope we are not that point) even though a more qualified doctor could have been there.

plus native americans probably suffered more in this country than all other races combined. if you decide to help a particular race, at least choose the right one.

That goes both ways... The poor John Doe won't be able to identify with Jeff Gordon as much as Shaquille O'neal could.

How can you have equal opportunity when things up to that point clearly aren’t equal? I also agree that programs like these would work better if they were based on class as opposed to just race.

Most of these programs are geared towards entrance into a certain job/school towards the end of the line (i.e. entering high school, college, getting a job after graduation, etc). Focus these efforts at the beginning of the line, when skillsets and other things are learned. This country is supposed to have a quality educational system for everyone. What happened to those days….

We do have a quality educational system for everyone. You just have to be able to get a high enough score to get in. Some groups have not shown they can do that

Actually we don't. There are tons of sad, underfunded public schools in HISD alone.

The key word is everyone, not everyone that can afford it.
