Not really luck, you did as everyone should have done. IIRC, they were saying that over 75% of the problems people had with installing Xp were driver issues. The real problem when it first came out was that alot of companies hadn't released XP-compatible drivers for their older hardware.
OK, Pun finally got his hands on a copy of XP from the university but now it saying program cannot be run in DOS mode when he tries to install it on a clean hard drive, what's up?
OK Pun figured it out but has now received an error message when he rebooted when the program told him to. This is the exact error message: STOP: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum} The image user32.dll is possible corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum. What does that all mean?
With XP you use the Recovery Console to replace the damaged file. Boot the PC with the XP installation CD-ROM in the drive, you may need to enable boot from CD-ROM in the bios in order to be able to do this. With the Welcome to Setup screen displayed, press <R> key, which should bring you to the command prompt C>. Type the following:- cd windows\system32 <Enter> ren user32.dll user32.bak <Enter> expand d:\i386\user32.dl_ c:\windows\system32 \user32.dll . The first line changes to the folder where user32.dll is kept then you rename the file in case you need it again and then copy the compressed file off the CD to where it needs to be. The _ at the end of dl_ indicates that it is compressed and ‘expand’ is the Windows command to uncompress files, and of course you have to tell it the files full name and where to put it. Restart the PC in the normal fashion. If this has not worked then you will have to do a Repair installation. Boot from the CD and hit enter to install XP, <F8> to accept the license and <R> to repair. You will lose some set up data and your restore points, more info can be found at Q312369 and Q301224
OK I finally got XP up and installed but now my computer is restarting like every 20 minutes for some reason. What's the problem there?
It actually keeps restarting and freezing up sometimes and Pun doesn't know what's wrong. Any help, please!!!
I you have for example two stick RAM in teh slots, 128 and 256 it's not compatible or if you have both are 128 but one is 133MHz adn the other is 266Mhz then that could be the reason. So make sure you know your ram
Well if yuo did not do a clean install and upgraded from windows 98, another problem is that your earlier windows probably have a worm that is call MSBLAST.D or W32.Welchia. get a virus scan such as Norton anti virus scan 2003 or PCCillin to get rid of it. IF it was a clean installation ignore this.
I believe he has just one stick of 256. I guess he needs to crack open the case and look and see. RAM must have a lot to do with XP because I don't remember it being all about RAM with earlier editions of XP. Is there anyway he can find out what his RAM is without cracking open the case?
Give me his computer layout if you can example: AMD Athlon 1300 MHz 1 memeory of 512 DDR RAM GeForce4 4800 SE 128 Mb RAM Integrated AC'97 Soundcard Jetway 866AS KT266 Motherboard Windows 2000 Pro SP4 DirecX 9.0 44.03 nvidia Drivers Also did teh computer give any notice when freezing or rebooting? YOU can jsut out how many ram you have by going to control panel and click system and at the bottom it will tell you how much ram you have. ALso when booting up it will also tell you at the beginning how much ram you have. BUt make sure you have one type of stick ram. This sounds like a hardware complication. I had this problem before and it was my ram. they were both 512 133Mhz but it wasn't compatible because of the manufacture. when I went otu and got both the same ram with same brand it works fine.
Here's what I could gather: AMD Athalon 1.0 GHz 256 MB RAM (Is there anyway to tell how many sticks you have without opening the case?) NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 100/200 VIA AC '97 Audio Controller (WDM) Spacewalker Mainboard Do you get anything from that?
Well, it could be anything from hardwares to drivers complication. Make sure teh computer is well ventilated and the power supply isn't dying. Try to go to http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_45.23 and install this latest driver. BUt you will need to open up teh case to see if you only have one stick of ram. It could be yuor motherboard bios that might need to be flash but best is to check the ram and make sure all the wires and plugs are not lose.
