I am kinda young to actually remember those. I was probably four or five or six.

I am content with Hyper Color Shirts.

My roomies would, I suspect, never mud wrestle, let alone naked.

Have to agree with Macbeth. Wrestling does nothing for me.

Plus, I could kick all these guys' asses.

I started watching like in the 5th grade. But then I watched...like regularly. WCW...and WWF. I liked the WCW more back in the day. And I really didn't watch the wrestling matches because they were basically the same...with different people. The parts I like are their plays and like interviews and big talks and dissing crowds and intros. It's great....it WAS great. UNTIL WWF bought WCW and ECW and screwed up everything! THe INVASION was supposed to be awesome with a bunch of superstars all with conflicts. WCW/ECW vs. WWF. But they screwed it up...they used all the crappy guys...no stars. So it got pretty boring...other interests. It's just like acting..a long series. Neverending. And now it's WWE. I still watch it when I can...and it's still very entertaining. Torrie Wilson and Stacy Keibler are still there. ;) It's still funny at times...I don't get why people actually go to events though.

When I was a little kid during the late 80's and early 90's, I freaking loved Hulk Hogan. Then I didn't watch rasslin' again until I was about 12 and then I watched it til I was about 17 or 18. For me, it was some of the highlight stuff. My favorite guy by far was Shawn Michaels. When he left, I kinda lost interest in the up and coming stars. I was also turned off by the whole new "Attitude" where everybody is a bad guy. I still will watch a little from time to time if I catch it, but if you haven't kept watching, you might be a bit confused on what's going on, "wasn't a fan favorite? Oh, he betrayed so and so and sold out."

U havent been to a Live event? Let me tell you, you will have a BLAST!!! I thought it would suck too but I went to the Smackdown after 9/11, had lots of fun. Since then I have been to another Smackdown (and probably next month's too), a Raw, a Raw house show, and Bad Blood PPV. Had a blast at all of them.

As for wrestling, I just watch it cause it entertains me. I know its fake and pre determined but its like watching a soap opera. There are story lines although some I would NEVER want to witness *cough* the announcer rival *cough* but they are some interesting ones. The nWo invasion by far was the most genius storyline that was made at that time, the early years at least. I give them the uttermost respect cause they usually dont get an off time unless they are injured. Lately, I havent been really watching much since I work Monday nights but still keep up with it by reading the reports.

as has been said, it's a soap opera for guys. you get a storyline, people betray each other, they join this group or that, and then people kick each other's asses every few minutes. what could be better. soap operas are predetermined but people seem to like those. and even if it's predetermined, we don't know what's going to happen so it essentially isn't.

i don't watch it right now, but i always liked it when i was a kid (circa 89-91 lets say) and would watch tapes at my friend's some times. always nice to see all the old wrestlemanias. wrestlemania III, hogan vs andre the giant, still the world's indoor attendance record, which is just crazy.

and then i never watched it forever until one summer i just decided to check it out. and apparenly it was the monday nitro right after hogan had been announced as the 3rd member of NWO. so i hopped in at the right time.

definitely true. that went off about as well as possible and carried wcw to the top for a long time. then after a while it inevitably wore off.

the rock was an awesome personality and him getting on the mic was always great.

and then there was the wrestlemania in houston. i had never been to a live event and when we heard it was coming to houston, my friends and i decided we had to go. 10x better than i thought it would be. rock vs stone cold may have been the best match ever and the crowd was absolutely crazy, especially since it was hard to figure out who to root for. since then, i haven't really watched or kept up with wrestling at all. i'll probably check back in eventually.

anyway, the appeal is the soap opera for guys angle and the fact you don't know what's going to happen. hell, it's like recording a rockets game. the game's already been played, but it's still exciting b/c you have no idea what's going to happen.

No wonder so many Hollywood movies are all actions and special effects without much substance. Great power to the wrestling fans.;)

Practically my whole family, at least the guys anyways, are wrestling fans, so I was destined to become one. I don't remember when I started watching it though. Pretty early, I think. I just usually try to forget it is already predetermined, but I do get a little mad when a referee gets knocked out by a slap to the face for 5 minutes or they take the extra effort to slide into the position to NOT see the bad guy cheat. I just hate it when it is too obvious. Other than that, I think it is great. It is pretty entertaining and the wrestlers really work hard at what they do.

BTW, I also got to go to WM in Houston. It was pretty awesome. :)

Every once in a while, Ill stay on TNN for a few mins and catch a bit of the WWE, although not much. I still think its fun to watch, but can only take so much of the "drama". I look at it purely from an entertainent standpoint and don't look at it as a sporting event. Its fun watching what some of these wrestlers are willing to do these days.

I was heavy into wrestling when I was younger. Does anyone else remember the old Mid-South/UWF wrestling that came to Houston several times a month, usually on Saturdays??? That is where Mattress Mac got his start, being interviewed by Paul Boesch.

Anyway, the Sam Houston Coliseum made the Compaq Center look like the Taj Mahal. Place was dirty, dingy and I do believe that they only had one or two working lights in the whole arena (VERY dark). I took a photography class in junior high and always took pictures when I went there. The security there was pretty loose and they would practically let you come right down next to the ring and snap photos. I remember some of the wrestlers to this day:

    "Dr. Death" Steve Williams

Ted Dibiase (before he was the millionaire dollar man; always wore a "loaded" glove)

    Hacksaw Jim Dugan

    The Fabulous Freebirds

    Sting (before he was popular)

    "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert

The Missing Link (one of my all time favs)

and my fav wrestler of all time ..........from Holstad street in Chicago .............THE ONE MAN GANG!!!

    hehehe

You mean pro wrestling is fake?:( I am so crushed.

Okay, this is a weird thread but RIET has been absolutely hilarious in it.

I have always said that professional wrestlers are the greatest actors in the world!:p

I think it was John Stoessel (sp) from 20/20 that once made the mistake of mentioning rasslin' was fake to a professional rassler.

    He got b****-slapped.

No longer a fan here, but as a kid, I used to love going to the Sam Houston Coliseum and watch Johnny Valentine, Wahoo McDaniel, Wild Bull Curry, Mil Mascaras and Ernie Ladd. Paul Boesch was king.

What other program takes you through the entire spectrum of emotions in a 2-hour period? None.

The appeal to wrestling is psychological, not physical. The methods in which the script writers *consistently* evoke the intended emotions from the fans is absolutely incredible to watch. There are many parallels that can be drawn from psychological control in pro wrestling and applied to real-life situations. I have used some of these very techniques to drive you, MacBeth, to the point of rage in many debates in D&D. The manipulation, domination and control -- not on a physical level between the wrestlers, but on a psychological level between the the wrestlers/script writers and the fans. It's amazing what they do. The huge muscles and hot babes gets people to watch, the psychological manipulation keeps them there.
