    It's funny how today's racists deny being racist by comparing themselves to the standards of 100 years ago.

    "I didn't say I hate minorities, so I'm not racist."

    BS. The world has moved on. Today's racists tread on the line and direct their hatred towards race-oriented issues in order to avoid commenting directly on race issues. If the test for whether someone is racist or not is whether they say something blatantly racist, then there are virtually no racists left in the world. I wish that were true, but we all know it is not. Racists change their tactics over time in order to be able to continue airing their views without persecution. This has been the case since forever. On one hand it means racism is becoming less acceptable. On the other hand, it means we have to constantly be aware of the evolving game of racists.

    The mere indication that minorities don't work hard because their culture doesn't value hard work... is racist. It ignores everything but race. It ignores circumstances. It ignores contextual definitions of valuable work. It ignores personality types. It ignores research. It ignores the fact that even a single group like African Americans consists of at least dozens of cultures. The only thing it doesn't ignore is the label > race/minority. This is racism, even if it is reverse-engineered to appear otherwise.

    In the same exact way, a lot of the world hates American culture because Americans are viewed as rich, lazy, obnoxious, insensitive, spoiled children. That is a racist and ignorant view. It ignores the circumstances. It avoids the science. It avoids the contextual definition of valuable work. It ignores everything except the grouping label > American. Therefore it is racist (obviously, American is not a single race, but you get the idea).

    Back to topic: bottom line, Norway is kicking everyone's ass in this field, and we shouldn't be so arrogant as to brush off their achievement.

    A distinction needs to be made here between:

    1) How to avoid people going to jail for the first time.
    2) How to avoid recidivism.

    The first one is influenced by environment, but the second one is influenced mostly by the environment inside prison.

    I actually read all that, and I've concluded that:

    A) You're lost and truly don't know what you're talking about
    B) You're completely wrong.

    I'm not sure your collective set of life experiences qualify you to speak intelligently on this topic, especially since you live in the Middle East.

    So, for prison to work you have to have an environment that is worse than where you were before you went to prison. You have to have some liberties inside the system that allow you to further adjust to behaviors inside the system.

    Prisons in Norway would be like the garden of eden to someone from some third world country that grew up with no roof, food, or clothing. People would be lining up to get into such nice digs.

    That's where the biggest double eged sword is...if we all of drug addicts, abusers, and users were some how weeded out from the system. It would more or less collapse the prison system, which would lose alot of funding... much less inmates to take of in ultra sized prison. You'd have to close a number of prisons....that means a loss of jobs and revenue.

    I don't see that happening anytime soon.

    That's the problem. They have too much incentive to incarcerate people. Prison is an extreme punishment. Prison should be the last option not option number 1. A speeding ticket can lead to being jailed, is this really necessary?
    A pot smoker deserves to be jailed with violent criminals? Regardless of political affiliation, race or religion we should all be able to agree upon the fact that too many Americans are currently incarcerated.

    You do have it right sort of. Norwegians are raised with a moral code that says we are all in it together and it is even Christian to pay high rates of taxes to keep fathers in families and not throw away people to prison, recidivism, lack of health care and especially mental health care which leads often to incarceration ertc.

    Too many Americans are into the anti-morality version of social darwinism known as libertaianism or really just conservative GOP economics which leads stressed out broke fathers abandoning their families. Thugism (ignoring the aspect of its that is just another typical conservative coding for racism) is in some ways just one version of the everyone out for themselves version of society.
