Not only that, he was not sent down "the next day" after his one major league start. He hung around for 2 more weeks.

Tough to see a good guy like Wilson go, despite his relative non-factor.

It was a good move though.

PW was second on the club with 55 RBI and third with 105 hits. Sure, his homerun total wasn't what we were expecting at 9. He hasn't exactly been this subpar player some of you are making him out to be. I like what he did for the club. He had many clutch hits when the rest of the Astros we're doing jack squat. I understand why the move was made with the crowded outfield but I don't necessarily like it.

Sad to see Wilson go. Then again, you know you're in trouble when Craig Biggio has 7 more HRs than you do. Plus, there's only room on the team for ONE player who strikes out 25% of the time, and his name is Morgan Ensberg.

Did you know? Luke Scott's 1.136 OPS average (assuming he can keep it up) is #1 in all of MLB right now. In addition, he has 6 less HRs than Wilson in 311 less ABs.

He gave up three hits, and didn't pitch a complete game. You could properly say "combined on a three-hitter," but little else.

Edit: but he didn't give up a run, either. :p

Last 10 games he's hitting .275 with 10 RBIs, 3 HRs and 3 runs scored...Preston's last 10 games produced a .194 avg with 5 RBIs, 1 HR and 3 runs scored. Neither has been spectacular by any means but Huff has started hitting a little more recently; plus I think he has more upside.

Glad Peewee is gone. Astros don't need nice guys on their team.

Pretty much this boils down to the fact that they had Preston Wilson signed for a year and knew that they weren't going to pick up his contract for the next three years. Basically, Lane and pretty much anybody else the Astros would have sent down fit into the Astros' plans for the future, while Wilson didn't. At least that's the way I take this move.

I strongly dislike this move, for a couple of a reasons.

    1) They better know an AL team will trade for him, because you do not release a guy to the competition that could affect your playoff chances. Could you imagine if say St Louis, or the Mets, both of whom have been rumored to be wanting either a bat or an OF bat, get him. We still have 7 games with both remaining(14 total). If he goes to the AL, the sting of this move hurts substantially less, but right now we just don't know.

    2) They could have sent Borkowski down or use Nieve as the 5th starter until September 1st, then you call up Hirsh. Borkowski has pitched like twice in the last month, and do you really think Hirsh will be that much better right now than what Nieve was doing earlier in the year as a starter. I strongly doubt he would be right away. The point is there were other options.

But again, my worst fear is a team with outfield trouble in the NL WC race just signs him outright after this, and it could easily come back to bite the astros in the butt.

As a player do I fear Wilson, no. But the guy is still capable of producing, and he could easily help a team the last 2 months. Also with those teams it comes at the Astros expense. Let's say you don't make the playoffs by one or two games, and say Wilson is on either STL or NYM. He has a big contribution in a couple of those seven games(and they beat Houston) and then how do you feel.

It was a move that did not need to be made is the point, and there isn't really a positive outcome that could come out of it.

it's also just as likely, if not more, that he goes to one of those teams and struggles like he did here. that's a positive outcome for us. he has no real place on this team and he wasn't getting his starting job back. rather then let him sit as our second or third bat off the bench, i think we did him a favor to release him. when the roster expands in september, guys like house would probably have even moved in front of him.

i'm willing to take the risk that wilson doesn't come back and tear us a new one at some point. i just don't see it as that big a deal.

His obp was low but he was second on the team with runs batted in so he was doing the job just had low power numbers.

Bad move by the Astros. They should have looked at other options. Willy T better watch his back now. He's got the darkest complexion left on the team now that PW is gone. :D
