Because he is owed close to a million dollars next year. Wilson has no guaranteed contract for next year.

Exactly what i'm wondering. Palmeiro is worthless. I'd much rather have Wilson on our bench than Palmeiro.

Pretty stupid to sign Palmeiro for a million a year. The guy is completely worthless. He should be getting the league minimum.

Ugh. Palmeiro is much more valuable than Wilson to the bench. Palmeiro is needed because he's a contact hitter who can come in and put the ball in play with a runner on third and under two outs. Wilson is redundant... we have a player just like him in Jason Lane. As a starter, Wilson is certainly a better player than Palmeiro... but on the bench, you want players of varying skill sets. Palmeiro is unique and needed on this team given our inability to make contact in certain situations. Wilson is redundant. There's the move.

It's a no-brainer, really. We weren't going to re-sign him anyway, and there are capable replacements for his positions (Huff, Scott, Burke, Lane) all over the place. To the poster that questioned if Scott would keep it up or fall off (like Burke)... he may not. And he definitely won't keep up his current pace. But it doesn't exactly take that much to match Preston Wilson's output. And Burke, for all his struggles the last couple of weeks, is still having a better season than Preston himself. Scott may or may not be a stud, but I don't think there's much doubt that at a minimum he can produce an OPS in the low .700s range, which is where Preston was.

I wouldn't be starting Hirsh tonight.

Good move. As sorry as Jason Lane is, he's got better OBP and SLG than Wilson, and is under contract for next season at a cheap price. Wilson strikes out far too often and is 2nd in the NL in grounding into DPs. He was supposed to provide some pop, but he never reached double figures in home runs despite playing basically full time all year. I'm a bit surprised they chose to keep all the relievers instead of just sending Borkowski or Nieve down, given the number of pitchers already on the roster. But losing Wilson is no big deal.

Exactly. The Astros could have avoided having to make a roster move and possibly lose a contributing member of the bench if they didn't call up Hirsh. Sure, he has proved himself major league ready after dominating at the AAA level, but this isn't necessarily the best time for his 1st major league start.

It may have been a wiser move to have given him an entire spring to earn the 4th or 5th starter spot in the rotation. In the meantime, the Astros are back in the pennant race and this is no time to throw him into the fire. Nieve has already proven he can give 5 good innings and was a much better option to start this game. That way the front office would not have been forced to make a roster move regarding one of the bench players.

Additionally, if the Astros really wanted to give Hirsh some innings in the bigs, there is no reason they could not have waited for the roster expansion on September 1st. In the meantime, there are capable players to fill the 5th starters spot the next few times through the rotation. Not only is Nieve capable, but Borkowski can fill Nieve's long relief role should a possible start make Nieve unavailble for a few days. I just don't get it. Although Preston has not been contributing lately, it's nice to have an extra right handed bat on the bench with some power.

i have no understanding of why anyone is making a fuss over losing preston wilson. he's an absolute non-factor. nice guy but he wasn't doing much, nothing at all recently, and we certainly don't have a lack of outfielders capable of doing equally as well as him.

when your in a playoff chase....you want to start your best pitcher avaiable.....esp since that pitcher has been tearing up the minors all year. every game is important and hirsh's time is now.

preston has no more power then jason lane, probably less.

i don't know what hirsh's future looks like but he's dominating triple A and there comes a point where you have to give him a shot. now is as good of time as any. nieve is being groomed for the time being to come out of the bullpen.

Just to be clear here the Astros did try to send down Lane, but he didn't clear wavers, so they had to pull him back and keep him on the team or let him go.

If they could have sent down Lane that would have been their choice.

He seemed like such a good guy :(
Giving high-fives to teammates when they homered and always had a big smile in the dugout. I hope this doesn't bring down locker-room chemistry.

My question is why is Sampson not the 5th starter ? I mean he only pitched a one hitter and then was sent down the next day.. :(

Why do people keep saying this? He never pitched a 1 hitter in the majors.
