Thread should probably be moved to the D&D before it gets out of hand...

And in a push to get it out of hand,

No Olympics for Chicago, here’s a million dollars smile

What are you guys bitc*ing about?

This is an award given out on the world stage.

Be happy that an American received it.

Why the heck did they give this to Obama? He hasn't even been in office for a full year yet. He hasn't scored any major achievements internationally. This just degrades the Nobel Peace Price to a popularity contest, and gives Obama's opponents a ton of ammo.

I agree with the committee that Obama's priorities for promoting the ideals of peace, working together to solve our problems, and the responsibility of each nation are the right priorities. But jeez, make the guy at least walk the walk for a term or two before giving him a Nobel.

If I were a republican I'd be so pissed right now that Obama gets a Nobel for being internationally popular.

Maybe he's popular for a reason.

    Think about it.

When was it anything but a popularity contest?

It does seem premature. That was my first thought as well.

I am definitely proud of an American winning it. The President no less. At least our image on the world stage is starting to to get better.

You do realize the world is bigger than the Middle East? Do you expect decades of hatred to just go away?

We're making progress, that's all I'm saying. And that's more than I could have said about the previous administration.

The weakness of your argument suggests weakness in the underlying belief.

Or, is that the best you could come up with?

I was hoping Kanye West would grab the mic saying someone else deserved it.

Just to be clear, I'm a Democrat. I voted for Barack. I'm "over the moon" that we have this man as President, instead of his incompetent predecessor, or a man I had far more respect for prior to his bizarre choice as VP, Ms. Palin, which would be Senator John McCain. But I cannot, for the life of me, explain this choice so early in his first term, except for what popped into my mind right after I heard the news, and what The Gifford says here:

The above is the only explanation that makes sense. Absent that, it approaches the Nobel given to Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho for their brokering of the Vietnam War cease fire at the Paris "Peace" Accords in 1973. At least Le Duc Tho was honorable enough not to accept his. Honor was, and is, a foreign concept to Mr. Kissinger. I hope Mr. Obama accepts the prize on behalf of American democracy, which allowed this peaceful transition of power that clearly caused the President to get this award.

Oh, and I'll add WOW!

I don't know, I couldn't give two ****s either way. What is the big deal?

All it’s done so far is given both sides yet ANOTHER reason to incessantly snipe at each other. Yeah, like we really need that...

That's true to an extent, and I don't even follow the physics prize so much anymore (and I'm a physicist.) I do think you're comparing apples to oranges in the relative eras.

This year's prize(s) were really, really applied -- almost engineering prizes.
