I think there's a fleet of willing players with hours of WoW experience waiting and training to pilot these space faring robots.

It's gotta be like a Starcraft MMO.

In concept what you said is right except there are few things I like to point out:

    1) We have the Shuttles, 5 or 6 years ago, the gov. decicded to retire them in 2010. This bill actually extends the Shuttle's life. The Shuttles also cost a lot to fly, we should have tried to developed something cheaper a long time ago to take us to the Space station but we didn't.

There is actually new money to do that now and that is a big plus.

Still we are left to depend on the Russian for now but years ago we thought we only needed them for a few years because:

    2) We have the Space station that was scheduled to be decommissioned in 2015. Yes, it was scheduled to be completed in 2010 and de-comissioned in 2015. How crazy was that?

Its life is now extended to 2020.

    3) We started Constellation to go to the Moon, using old technology that ends at the Moon at best. The program is behind schedule and over budget. There is really not a lot to show for the money already spent. It will be canceled.

    4) We are trying to switch to private companies to develop newer technology to take us beyond the Moon. To the asteroids, Mars, and beyond.

    Some of the arguments:
    A) If you'd stayed with option 3, you just don't have money to do anything else. You will have spent 10, 20 years to develop a system that ties you to the Moon and stop there. To move further you have to develop new technology, you will have to do something similar to option 4 but you will be 10, 20 years late if you continue with option 3 now.

    B) The argument that dismisses private enterprises is a crazy one, pushed by the same people who dislike big government and it makes no sense. Who do think are doing all of the work now? It's private companies, contracted to the gov.
