Confirmation that the President was the one who refocused national security strategy to catching the world's most wanted terrorist, and has got A-Q on the run.

While I think drone strikes are unethical, and the robotization of any military is a cause for concern, there can now be no question that it was President Obama who faced these decisions, and single-handily got more results than Bush ever did in eight years.

An interesting insider's account of it all.

Of course, who is surprised that the Republicans get away with being "national security" experts, despite having an administration whose plan failed to "ensure that America expended every effort" to capture the world's most wanted terrorist?

10 years to get OBL is a miserable failure for both sides IMO.

Unless you're implying that Obama would have killed OBL 6 years ago had he been elected 10 years ago - which is unrealistic IMO.

I don't know if it's a failure of any kind for either side. There are entire communities over there that never have and never will perceive any benefit from Western intervention, it's not that hard to imagine them manifesting that resentment by harboring Bin Laden for decades.

The fact is, if you read the article, the C.I.A had a certain way of doing things when it came to Osama that the President was "unimpressed" by. He changed that strategy. A year or so later, Osama was dead, along with a host of other A-Q leaders.

I noticed you ignored that last sentence in your article that implied none of that worked.

You realize that was one paragraph in the middle of a nine page article, right? Sometimes, it helps to actually read before commenting. You might actually learn something.

as Major pointed out, the paragraph after...

The last few sentences of the actual article itself are quite intriguing and insightful as well.

This is a truly incredible statement.

At least 75% of what Obama has done has been to try to clean up the mess he inherited. That is a demonstrable fact. He inherited a recession that was strongly flirting with becoming a depression, sky-high unemployment, two wars, a huge deficit and record low public opinion for this country around the world. Virtually everything he has done or tried to do has been in response to all that.

The other 25% is near-universal health care. Assuming you're against that legislation, could you kindly explain how a law that hasn't even taken effect yet is destroying America?

looks like Obama killed Osama will be a major component of The Once's campaign:

    --
The White House clearly blessed the dramatic reconstruction of the mission by Nicholas Schmidle in The New Yorker — so vividly descriptive of the Seals’ looks, quotes and thoughts that Schmidle had to clarify after the piece was published that he had not actually talked to any of them.

“I’ll just say that the 23 Seals on the mission that evening were not the only ones who were listening to their radio communications,” Schmidle said, answering readers’ questions in a live chat, after taking flak for leaving some with the impression that he had interviewed the heroes when he wrote in his account that it was based on “some of their recollections.”

The White House is also counting on the Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal big-screen version of the killing of Bin Laden to counter Obama’s growing reputation as ineffectual. The Sony film by the Oscar-winning pair who made “The Hurt Locker” will no doubt reflect the president’s cool, gutsy decision against shaky odds. Just as Obamaland was hoping, the movie is scheduled to open on Oct. 12, 2012 — perfectly timed to give a home-stretch boost to a campaign that has grown tougher.

As it should be. Obama's record in office should be part of the campaign.

Your current post rate is about right.

If you think a president to the right of Nixon is "destroying America," the only logical conclusion is that you're left of glynch.

Yeah, and Reagen single-handily brought down the Soviet war machine a la Rambo.

(irony becomes apparent when you consider deficit spending and the Republican position then, and now)

btw, before one gets too far out in front of that article, which is indeed a gripping read, it's got some problematic aspects. for one, he never interviewed any of the seals directly (a fact not made clear by either the author or the NYer), yet he reports their thoughts, actual dialog, describes their clothing, even the contents of their pockets.

how can he know those things?
