    Jr's running scared --

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Tuesday ordered a temporarily halt in deposits to the nation's strategic petroleum reserve to make more oil available for consumer needs and relieve pressure on pump prices.

Bush also announced steps to ease environmental standards governing fuel grades.

The moves came as political pressure intensified on Bush to do something about gasoline prices that are expected to stay high throughout the summer.

Bush said the nation's strategic petroleum reserve had enough fuel to guard against any major supply disruption over the next few months.

"So, by deferring deposits until the fall, we'll leave a little more oil on the market. Every little bit helps," he said.

Republicans who control Congress have become concerned that the high cost of filling up could become a problem for them in the November elections. Polls suggest that voters favor Democrats over Republicans on the issue, and Bush gets low marks for handling gasoline prices.

High price of gas is caused by the high price of oil.

High price of oil is caused by unstability in the Middle East.

Unstability in the Middle East is caused by...

uhhh. We've concluded that gas is appropriately priced.

Doesn't DEMAND and SUPPLY play a part in the PRICE?

i bet in the end the bush investigation will blame the independently owned gas stations around the country for the price spike.

Did anyone else get this e-mail in your inbox yet? Fight the power  !!!!!!!!

    FW: Fwd: FW: Gasoline

This came from an engineer who retired from Halliburton. It's worth your consideration.

Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a gallon by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea.

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.

BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.81 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..... not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

    Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out at this point.... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people.

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us sends it to at least ten more (30 x 10 =3D 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =3D 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE
    >>>>HUNDRED MILLION >>>>PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am, so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you?

Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN.

We have more power than you think - if we unite and stay committed.

    THIS CAN REALLY WORK

it's really simple. Demand is high and there's not enough supply to meet demand. but the issue isn't oil prices, or even the supply of oil itself. the problem is the supply of gasoline, fueled, ahem, by a shortage of refining capacity. build more refineries, increase the supply, and prices will drop. and this problem existed long before katrina. it's essentially a NIMBY issue. we've made it too difficult to build new plants, much like we've made it too difficult to build new nuclear reactors. this is not a problem of bush's doing, but has been decades in the making.

the announcement today is just window dressing and will no real effect on the supply of gas, although it may have a symbolic impact.

Out of curiosity, if you were in charge of the probe, what questions would you ask?

Thank god we have Bush in office and not a flip-flopper. Much better to have a decisive Decider who likes to change his decisions in between making wrong ones than a flippity floppety wishidy washedy.

A Decisive Decider deciding the decisions, so America doesn't have to.

This is really specious logic. Buying gasoline at at say Shell instead of Exxon/Mobil will lower the price at Exxon a bit but will certainly raise the price at Shell. Matter of fact, Shell may very well run out of gasoline and would likely approach Exxon about their surplus. After a time Shell would become the number retailer and then they would be boycotted, sending consumers back to Exxon. At no point would consumers get cheaper gasoline.

What can really work is if we reduce the demand for gasoline by driving less.

I'm glad my city is introducing mass transportaion next month. The city has purchased several buses and established various routes, many to places I visit often and the first month is free to ride. I hope to utilize it fully.

On the rare occasions that I do drive, I tend to avoid Exxon - they're environmental nightmares. Same with Shell, and their corporate attitude generally is extremely arrogant to boot (had an arbitration against them once, total assholes). Chevron on the other hand puts in a lot of effort (for an oil company) into being environmentally friendly so I tend to patronize them if available.

Thanks for finding that I was looking aroud for it and couldn't find it. I remember a girl at work last year passing that around and everybody believed it so they all went to the local BP and gas dropped like 5 cents a gallon and they thought the whole plan was working. Then it went right back up and down, up and down, up and down...as usual Tools.

Seriously, this sounds like something an old-school democrat would do.

Hmm, we have a problem with high gas, I know, lets set up a big committee to find out what the problem is!
(Sits on thumbs for 3 months)
So, committee, what did you find? Gas prices are high because oil prices are high? interesting! How do we fix that?
(SIts on thumbs for a year)
So, what's new? Oh, we need to cut back on our dependence on oil, but it won't make a big difference because China and India are consuming at such a high rate? Oh well. Lets start a new committee to probe why we don't have alternative resources!

If you want a farmer to believe in aliens, you probe them. If you want oil companies to stop overcharging on gas, it will take a little more than a probe. What a typical asinine fake attempt to "fix" the problem from someone who has buddies in the industry and doesn't have to pay for his own gas like other Americans.

This is a democrat response done by a republican. What we need is a republican response done by a democrat, unfortunately none exist right now.
