We've been hit! (glenn earl) casualty: http://blogs.chron.com/nfl/2007/08/texans_have_plenty_of_work_to.html on the brightside, Schaub wasn't a deer, frozen at the sight of headlights, when the blitz ruptured the line.
They barely get a sniff of the field in the fourth preseason game. They play the most in the 3rd game. Special teams looks pretty good. Hopefully Mathis can stay on the field, and off a motorcycle. I'm just glad I saw Matt Schaub throw the ball when the pressure came instead of running out of bounds for a loss, or taking the hit with the ball in his arms.
I don't know what i saw was a lot of david carr in matt schaub overthrowing a easy touchdown as if right not i prefer david
Walter got bumped off by the corner who subsequently fell down. He wasn't that open when the ball was thrown and the he was slowed by the contact. It's a testament to Walter that he actually caught up to the pass the way he did. If the corner had fallen down prior to the pass, it wouldn't have been overthrown. Trust me.
I was telling my son that before the game started. We were both excited, but it's such a tease with very little substance. 2 series of first team offense.
My thoughts...It was preseason to get a little of what you will go with and more to see who can become part of what you will go with... First off, Van Pelt...wow...I think I could have looked more impressive at QB...He is gone so who cares... What I care about is the lines, and Shaub, and who else can contribute and make a good impression... Player I was most impressed with: Jacoby Jones... Great ability/instincts to get back to the ball...adjust...etc. I think he will be great. Mario and Ryans seem like they will step up and even though Shaub's stint was short, he showed enough to warrant comfort with him as the leader... I would have liked better penetration from the D-line, but considering the Bears O-line is well above average, I still viewed the first team as doing fairly good overall from the Texans... The O-line overall was ok, and again my hope is it will get better, in more games it will be better to ascertain...same as Okoye... Overall, I could immediately see the Texans defense as making the most strides so early....It should be fun!
I was happy that we finally saw our starting QB hit AJ in stride. No more of him having to stop, catch the ball behind him, and then try to make a play.
I watched the 2006 yearbook of the Texans before the game. I had forgotten how many of AJ's long receptions were just Carr chucking up a hail-mary into double coverage and AJ winning the jump ball... Some impressions of the game: Schaub stood tall in the pocket and didn't panic. Our running game is just 2 yards and a cloud of dust. Of course, the Bears D is pretty good, but still... Mathis looked great on that kickoff return. Field position is how you win games. Jacoby Jones seems to have a little Earnest Givens in him. Offensive and defensive playbooks looked pretty vanilla. Maybe that's why we couldn't pressue the QB or punch the ball in. Preseason football is REALLY boring. Can't believe they don't reduce ticket prices.
I know its just the first preseason game but the d-line was very mediocre. With three #1 picks they are going to need to be strong point of the D. The secondary needs them to pressure the QB. But Ryans is still a badass, he's like a machine out there. Looks like Jefferson from Fast times.
I know it's just a preseason game, but I'm scared of what little I saw from mario williams. I mean even amobi okoye played better than him, and it was his first game!!
I went to the game, i was hammered but from what i remember, we looked ok. Schaub wasn't in long enough to really tell anything. No running game, not much of a pass rush, but Grossman wasn't dropping back too long before unloading. Mathis and Jacoby are studs and will be fun to watch. Overall it was about what I expected from game 1. I won't pass judgement until I see more, but I think we'll be ok.
i'm always hesitant to say this because i've been a VY-supporter...and i don't want that to be the reason that it gives this impression. but as a texan fan...mario williams scares the crap out of me. i have absolutley no idea what to expect from him. and i'd like to have more than that out of a #1 pick. (please don't start a discussion about who else was there to be picked at #1...it's not about that, anymore).
From the Chron: Quiet night Former No. 1 overall pick Mario Williams didn't make any noise in his first preseason outing. Williams played at left end on the first two series of the game. He had no tackles and no quarterback hurries. "I was basically just going out there and running around and trying to get a feel for it and then making adjustments," Williams said. "I probably should have made some adjustments earlier since I was only out there for so long. But it's only preseason." He's right in thats its only preseason but I really need to see something out of Mario this year. His biggest knock coming out of the draft was his motor, a lot talked about him taking plays off and we just can't have that. Hopefully he'll have a big year for us, because the team and franchise really need him to have one.
I'm dissapointed in general from what I see and know about Mario. On the field he has shown glimpses of talent but really nothing exciting. Just like in college there have already been questions about his work ethic as well. If you watch him, he seems to overrun a ton of plays, take plays off,ect... Then he'll make a few plays that make you say "Wow". I'm with many others in being very worried about Williams. I think Schaub looked good from what we saw. It would have been nice if he had completed that pass to Walter but like another poster pointed out Tillman and Walter got tangled up and it slowed down Walter. Schaub throw on time and that's the pass he was making. He did look good under pressure but I really liked the timing between Johnson and him on the 15 yard reception. The ball was right there when Andre turned around and with Johnson's speed and that accuracy that should make things even easier on Andre. We still need a #2. What was wrong with McCardell? It's way too early to judge Okoye. he's just 19 and playing in his first NFL game. The fact that he is already starting makes me think highly of him. Mathis and Jones both looked good. Demeco was himself. All in all I'm only worried about mario
McCardell was hurt and wasn't planning on playing yesterday. Jones looked really good yesterday and hopefully he will continue to improve, I think he'll prove to be more of a #2 receiver than Walter come mid-season. Couldn't agree more about Mario.
I hope so. i think McCardell might make a run at that position as well. He's a really good possesion receiver and Shaub showed he does have good timing. he would be a good compliment to Andre. I agree on Jones. His footwork was what impressed me most last night. He also is qa prime example of not having your 40 time mean everything. He has deceptive speed and quicknees along with the great footwork he displayed. I'll have to see more of Walter to make a judgement. I still see Jones and McCardell being better options. It was nice to see options at kick retunrner in case mathis can't hold up. He looks like a good pick. Yeah, I'm banging my head on the wall with Mario. he just doesn't seem to be an impact player at all. Just looking at recent defenders who had a major impact and the games better defensive players Mario looks nothing lke them. DeMeco on the other hand looks like he's going to be elite
