It makes some sense. They want Lee catching everyday. Also, Julks over Dirden because Brantley should be back soon so why start Dirden's clock?
With neither Julks nor Dirden on the 40 man, I am guessing Julks got the nod because he also provides backup 3B depth?
From Brown's interview, sounds like mostly an experience thing. Dirden had limited AAA experience and didn't hit well in that limited spot. Julks had a full season at AAA and performed solidly. Just more of a known quantity. Depending on what they think of Dirden, it may be similar to Korey Lee where they'd rather have him playing full-time at AAA instead of riding the bench.
I'm just happy Diaz didn't get the "well he needs to play everyday" treatment. Something tells me Diaz is never going back to the minors again. The dude simply rakes.
It appears they like his versatility at an IF spot. Diaz has that at 1B. Salazar offers a left handed bat as backup C and defense first. There is consistency in an unexpected way. The surprise is how they will find 40 man roster spots
