From a defensive standpoint, it COULD be bad. Of course none of it matters if Carney or Redick cannot stay in front of their man, but in terms of getting a hand up in someone's face or being able to slap the ball if someone gets a step in front of you, a differnce of 7 inches in wingspan could be a big difference. Brewer has a an 83 inch wingspan, that's one of the reasons I like him. He is already a good defender and has the potential to being a lockdown defender type player.
Few things: 1. Rudy Gay has GREAT wingspan, 7'3... that's bigger than both Tmac AND Yao. For a 6'8'' wing player, that's amazing. 2. Samething for Tyrus Thomas. However, it's less impressive since he's considered a big man. 3. Redick's arms are way short (6'3... common). That definitely negates his surprising height. 4. Both Carney and Brewer have good wingspans (6'10' and 6'11). However, consider the combination of height and reach, Brewer is definitely bigger. 5. Roy's swingspan is very average (6'8). 6. Sear Sene has AMAZINGLY long arms (7'8). Being a legit 7 footer, that's a great attribute. His standing reach will be the same as Yao Ming. 7. If Morrison was gonna be good in the NBA, it won't be for his arms (6'10 is not bad, but nothing special). 8. Shelden Williams's got some Elton Brand/Ike Diogu in him. A 6'8 player with 7'4 wingspan is FILTHY good, even for a big man. No wonder he's a terrific shot blocker.
I believe Yao has a 7'4" wingspan and I've seen it listed at 7'5" some places too. Ohh well, Rudy Gay is almost a foot shorter but his wing span is only an inch or two smaller. Wow. Thats freakness. Tyrus Thomas at 6'8" 217....better hope he really get his ballhandling and range down pat because this guy is not a POWER foward at the next level unless he adds about 20-25 more pounds.
damn allen ray is a freak too. he is 6'1 and his wingspan is 5 inches longer than reddick's at 80 inches.
Short arms and regular sized hands are the recipe for a good shooter. It helps them get the shot off a lot quicker. Long arms and big hands is the recipe for bad shooting. Too much margin for error and a tendancy to have mechanical problems. That's why basketball is really a team game. It takes 5 guys on the floor working together to each other's strengths. You don't need 5 guys that are 7 foot tall with 96 inch wingspans out there. They probably wouldn't win. You don't need 5 TMacs. Your team chemistry would eat you up. You don't need 5 Yao's. They couldn't stop anybody and they couldn't break the press. You don't need 5 Kobes. You've only got one basketball. Besides that, some other team would put Shaq on the floor with one shooter and they would eat you up. You've got to be balanced and good in all areas. J.J. is the best shooter in this draft. Shoot, he's the best shooter to come into the NBA since Ray Allen. Somebody will draft him and his short arms and watch him drain jump shot after jump shot. That is what they will be paying him to do.
Tell that to Reggie Miller. If you're a good shooter, you're a good shooter. Defensively, wingspan does come into play whether you want to admit it or not.
if wingspans are that important, then we should all recruit chimpanzees to play basketball - they'll have great wingspans.
http://www.nba.com/draft2002/position_centers.html "....has a 7-5 wingspan and very good balance." http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1495244/bio "At the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, he was listed as having a 7' 5" wingspan, a 9' 8" standing reach, and a size 18 shoe US." http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/rockets/2002-10-29-yao-chatter_x.htm "Wingspan, fingertip-to-fingertip: 90 inches"
Not quite. Yao was measured with a wingspan of 7' 4 3/4" at his pre-draft camp: http://nbadraft.net/2002predraftmeasurements.htm I know he's got short arms for his height but sub-7'3". Come on.
That jumped out at me immediately. He's going to be an incredible shotblocker in this league. Even if he has no coordination he can have a long career as a backup center. I'd consider him if we didn't already have so many holes on the team. I'm telling you, with his strength, wingspan, and mass his best position in the league will be at center.
I agree with you to a certain extent. However, guys like Jordan (huge hands ) and Tmac (long arms) are very good shooters regardless of their physical makeups.
Andrea Bargnani 7-0 in socks 7-1 1/4 in shoes Standing Reach 9-2 Weight: 249lbs Raptors will make him play the 5, CV the 3. Should be interesting to say the least, dynamite offensive core, horrid defensive core.
1. Hmmm... for the standing reach part, Shelden Williams' reach is much shorter than I thought considering his huge wingspan. That's means he's got very broad shoulders, unlike Yao, whose wingspan is relatively small but his standing reach is good nevertheless, due to his thin frame. 2. Talking about frames, look at Tyrus Thomas. His wingspan is smaller than Williams, but his reach is FOUR INCHES higher. Now that's small frame and huge reach. 3. Carney and Brewer have the same reach after all. 4. Saer Sene's reach is 9'5. Great but not amazing, and it's lower than Yao's. I thought it would be amazing, but I guess not. 5. So Morrison's shorter, has smaller wingspan but has higher reach than Shelden Williams? That can't be right. OK, trade Yao + Tmac to Toronto for #1 and draft Morrison, I am sold. 6. Yep, Allan Ray's 3 inches shorter than Redick, but can reach 2 inches higher. That's freaky.
Yao's wingspan is 7-6, T-Mac's is 7-4. Remember when you gain weight in the upper body your wingspan increases. My wingspan before I started lifting weights was 6-2, I went from 140 pounds to about now 195 pounds and my wingspan is now 6-4. It is has been stated several times that at their current weight Yao has a 7-6 wingspan and T-Mac 7-4. People have really exagerrated Yao's short wingspan. Also as for Carnery being 7 inches longer, Brewer 9 than Redick, remember wingspan is across the body and both arms. So 7 inches is 3.5 inches on either side, and some of the is your body.
