UT has it's own power generation so they won't lose power i'm working at 290/183 area and we haven't lost power all day. My wife is working from home (south Austin ) and says power hasn't been cut at our house. Although street lights were out and the coffee shop didn't have power when she was out earlier
Not exactly how it works. You can be close to a hospital or even a generating substation and be on a completely different circuit.
Just got this alert from KHOU- Pretty awesome eating lunch with a client in the dark though. Gas stoves rule.
Or you could be on the same. I know when we lost power during Ike my area was turned back on faster than anyone I know because of the hospital and the FBI building that were on the same power grid.
http://www.centerpointenergy.com/newsroom/newsreleases/electricity/ - here is where they post their alerts.
Heard about this @ SFA up in Nacogdoches. They were expecting to have no power for around 45min because of the rolling power outages.
True. I'm just saying just because you live near a hospital doesn't mean you get your power back with them. I used to live in a house behind the medical center but it didn't get power back for 3 weeks after Ike. Rolling outages passed for now but doesn't mean they won't be back. Depends on if ERCOT/rest of Texas can bring their generating units back on before the next peak or if there is a concentrated effort to drop the demand. Turn your heaters lower if you don't want more outages.
With a forced air furnace, or really any with an electrical thermostat, you will still need some electricity but the overall power usage to heat your house will be less if you have gas heat versus electrical heat.
I got one last night at 11. It went off, on, off, on, off in about 10 seconds. Good thing no fuses were damaged. Sounds like they are looking for an excuse to jack up the rates even more in Texas.
