Just back up from our 2nd outage at the office. Got a memo from the property group telling us to expect it every couple of hours for the rest of the week. Like work wasn't already annoying...
it seems like it at my house. i've got an old house on pier and beam with wood floors. my furnace was on all night and barely got the thermostat up to 67 degrees. luckily, i can trap the heat in the bedroom. but stepping on that bathroom floor? might as well been lake michigan.
Just saw on the news that some plants were affected so that is why we are having issues...they said it might last until Friday and CP is crossing the fingers we will not have to deal with this for more than a day. The storm is sure being kind to all of us across the states. I wonder if superbowl officials are freaking out yet...
DonnyMost, your explanation makes sense and I realized it was because of the cold. Just seems odd to me that when people switch from air conditioning to heat, the most air conditioned city in the world can't handle the power demands.
You'd be surprised at how much of a difference the way the building is designed makes. We have adapted to our climate, so when it changes drastically, we naturally suck more power and do so less efficiently.
As I've explained, this is not the problem. The rolling power outages are not because of the high demand here in Houston. Two power plants were lost/shut off due to ice problems elsewhere in the state and the company that handles most of the state power grid has gone to emergency mode to handle the power throughout the state. Additionally, as this is not a "houston only problem" please remember that while we are experiencing cold and wind, elsewhere in the state they are having major ice problems, snow, etc. and are using significant resources.
I work remotely in Seattle, but the home office is in Houston in the 1960 area. They've been having hourly outages at 15 past on the nose, each lasting 20-30 minutes. They're about to break for the day, which kind of means I get to break for the day.
South West area.. power goes out every 45 mins then comes back for 30-45 mins and then goes away. This the 4th time already today.... it's really starting to get annoying.
All of this could have been avoided if Houstonians would have just wrapped their gas meters last night.
I'm an engineer for CenterPoint and this will continue indefinitely until some generation comes back online. This is mostly due to problems in areas outside of our system. Let me know if y'all have questions and I'll share what I know/allowed. This could very well go for a few days. On my lunch break now but will have to stay over time and maybe even work shifts. Inclement weather might mean no work for y'all but it's more work for us
