Kirby Puckett was by far my favorite non-Astro while growing up. I loved his style of play and still to this day use a similar batting stance (of course it's for Sunday night slow pitch softball now). I still have his rookie cards and many others from throughout his career. RIP, Kirby. Thanks for the memories.
RIP Its really sad here in Minnesota and the whole state is in mourning. For Minnesotans this would be like if Hakeem died. One of the things about Kirby that everyone remembers was how well he related to the fans. My grandmother along with several of my family moved to the Twin Cities in the late 70's and even though she never learned much English one of the things she did learn to say was "Kirby". I remember visiting her and when the Twins were playing she would tell me in Mandarin to change the channel so she could watch Kirby play.
not that it matters much, but to be correct, he was 45. Regardless, a sad day. Surely everyone will miss Puck. Hope baseball does something to remember him this season
What a damn shame. He was such a great player and such a great guy. What a shame to see him go at such a young age. Baseball was never the same without him, and now he will be eternally missed. We'll miss you big guy.
I think in SI, I read that Puckett was some sort of sexual predator. http://www.twincities.com/mld/twinc...00.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/news/2003/03/11/si_puckett/ Part of the article of him saying mean things: But that image also was a sham, according to Nygren. One day after he had retired, she told SI, they were together when Puckett said he had to leave to visit a sick child who was waiting to meet him. “That’s great, you get to make that kid’s day,” Nygren told him. “That must make you feel good.” But she said Puckett just snapped back at her. “I don’t give a s---,” he said. “It’s just another kid who’s sick.”
R.I.P., Kirby. Now for the message: Obesity kills. Don't let yourself go like he did. Exercise and eat healthy.
Drove by the Metrodome today and a makeshift memorial has been started up for Kirby and the flags are flying at half staff for him. Along with the flowers and other memorablia people are actually crying for him too. The outpouring of emotion reminds me of the reaction to Wellstone's death and shows how much of an icon he was to Minnesotans. Here's the article and pics from the Startribune. http://www.startribune.com/10017/story/289858.html
