Well yes, until he suffered back to back knockout losses.

    He was.

Huge recent meltdown. I think the culprit is too much jumping between weight classes. Anyone else able to add some insight into this? I really don't follow boxing, but I was always amazed by Roy Jones Jr.

Yeah it was age & moving up and down. I always think he should have stopped off at Cruiserweight and gently rode off into the sunset as champ at yet another weight class but that division is a total wasteland since everybody skips it on the way up to heavies.

i don't watch much boxing but watching clips of roy jones jr. is just amazing. just toys with guys and they can't touch him. this one clip, he kinda bends backwards for a second to kind of mock the other guy, so then not to be shown up, the other guy does it. as soon as the guy gets back after his little move, jones just f'ing decks him.

so of course, after hearing about and seeing clips of this legend, i decide to go watch his second fight against tarver on ppv at someone's place, and of course he gets knocked out for the first time ever. tarver had barely even touched him for the round and a half it lasted (not much happened anyway, but it was all jones doing what little did happen) and then jones missed on a punch when tarver left himself open and tarver swung at the same time and connected, and that pretty much ended jones career. i wanted to see him put on a show.

are there any videos of jones fights or clips i could d/l somewhere of his old fights? i wanna see more than the older version getting beat by tarver.

    I agree.

Tszyu would get more recognition if he was boxing in America.

The thing is, he has taken on just about everyone has has been able to in his weight division and beaten them.

He had just one loss....and came back a better fighter for it.

A number of times he has come up against fancied American opponents. The experts have said he will be in for a tough fight.

That usual ends in a dominating performance in which Tszyu knocks his opponent out.

He punches like a fighter that should be a few weight division higher. He is a VERY smart fighter, he is confident......he's just one of the very best and some suggest he is the best ever at his weight division.

In my opinion any list that doesnt feature him atleast in the top three isnt even worth looking at.

That was when he fought James "Lights Out" Toney in 1993. At the time, Toney was the heavy favorite and reigning middleweight champion as well as a top pound for pound fighter. That fight got Jones a lot of respect.

He could've stayed at heavyweight too, he held the WBA belt after he beat Ruiz. Losing 25 lb of muscle in a limited amount of time before he fought Tarver just wasn't intelligent, the human body is not meant to do that.

Cruiserweight isn't a wasteland anymore, there's a big fight on April 2 on Showtime: Wayne "Big Truck" Braithwaite vs. Jean Marc Mormeck. They each hold one belt, so the winner gets both the WBC and WBA titles.

I don't know who saw Morales-Pacqiao but it was well worth it, as was the prelim bout between Arce & Hussein in which Arce - who had a vagina sized cut on his nose early, came back to win a 10h round KO in a very compelling bout.

In the main show Morales put on a virtuoso technical performance, and was tough as nuts too. He took Pacquiao's best shots and shook them off, then outboxed him the rest of the time. Pacquiao didn't seem to have the same power up at 130 that he had at 124 although that might be due more to Morales than anything else

Symbolic of his performance was the 12th round in which Morales, knowing he was ahead on points, switched to southpaw in what apparently was an attempt to let Pacquiao take his best shot and show he could take it. He let him unload the whole arsenal and was not fazed. When Merchant asked him why the hell he stood toe-to-toe that round he just laughed and said "Te gusta?"

You basically need a shotgun to stop most Mexican champs from coming at you; for a guy like Morales (and Arce for that matter), I'm not sure if a shotgun would be enough becuase Pacquiao unloaded all he had and it barely fazed him.

So now there's sort of a rock-paper-scissors think at featherweight- Pacquiao can beat Barrera who can beat Morales who can beat Pacquiao. Hard to say who is the best but I think Morales has proven that he might be the toughest.

I think out of all 3 boxers, Barrera is the best. When Pacman beat he wasnt fighting the Barrera we all know. If Pacman was to fight Barrera again, I think Barrera could knock him out.

Arce is crazy, but I don't think Hussein Hussein's trainer should have stopped the fight, he was hurting Arce a lot.

Pacquiao fought well for a guy with only vision in one eye most of the fight. Also, they didn't let him wear the gloves he wanted to wear. Talks of a rematch are surfacing already, it would be fun to watch.

When (drunken) Larry started telling the story of the gloves in the middle of the round, butchered the story, then confused Lampley & Jones, who didn't get it even though it was obvious how he had misspoke at the beginning, and then tried to re-tell the story correctly, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A HUGE-ASS ACTION SEQUENCE IN A SUPER EXCITING FIGHT, I basically was ready to start throwing bottles at the TV.

Of those 3, Lampley is an airhead and full of himself though adequate enough, Jones is an absolute gem, and Merchant's inebriated rambles are either amusing or incredibly annoying. Of course, Harold Lederman is worth the price of admission every single time "Hokay Jim!...."

The story with the gloves is the Nevada State Athletic Commission wouldn't let Pacquiao wears the gloves he's worn in every other fight he's had in the United States, Reyes gloves. It was a mistake on the part of Manny's promotor. The thing about Jim Lampley is whoever he calls more punches for, it makes it look like that person is winning the fight, so it's skewed. Roy Jones is funny to listen to, he finally Larry Merchant out saying he has never in the ring.

    The problem with Kostya is....

He has yet to face another GREAT fighter. The best fighter he has faced in his career is Zab Judah, a very good fighter but far from great.

Kostya has had great fighters to fight throughout his career. DLH was in his division, but Kostya got knocked out by Vince Phillips so DLH moved on. Also, there has been a ton of great fighters for him to face one division higher. Tito, DLH, Shane Mosley, Whitaker, Forrest, Quartey...etc While other fighers move up 3, 4, 5, or even 6 divisions (DLH), Kostya has not moved up once.

Also, alot of die hard boxing fans will never forgive Kostya for not rematching with Vince and remembering Kostya not even wanting to talk about him and would actualy start to stutter when someone brought him up.

I give Kostya alot of credit for not just beating, but dominating many very good fighters, but to be considered one of the best 3 pound for pound fighters in the world, I think you would have to aleast face one of the top 10.

    Nice recap of the fight.

Don't forget about Marquez, who from what I have heard, will be Morales's next opponent.

In Marquez's fight with Manny Pac, Marquez got dropped 3 times in the first round, but after the first he might have done a better job against Manny than Morales.

Vince Phillips was a chump too. The last time I saw him he actually fought in K-1 Max under kickboxing rules, where he got punished by then Japanese champ Masato. Phillips, who was 40 or so then, was there for the paycheck and thought he would go three easy rounds. Unfortunately for him, k-1 put his washed up ass up there to "prove" that kickboxers could beat up boxers, and he got absolutely punished with low kicks to the thigh and eventually got KO'd after his leg got fractured.
