I was thinking what could be the worst case scenario for us and realized it's very possible if the Yankees were smart and lacked the pride (so probably impossible). Could they fire Cashman and hire Luhnow? Can't beat them, join them? Could that be an incentive to bringing Luhnow back for Click or is there no possible way the Yankees would do that out of fear of fan backlash? I'm worried Yankee fans are so depressed and pissed they would view it as a chance to spit in our faces metaphorically...
The amount of pessimism and fear on this board is bizarre. It's like people can't just enjoy their team and constantly need to find things to be scared/depressed/upset/angry about.
What of my good friends is a Yankees fan, and we discuss this quite often. Luhnow would be the best thing the Yankees could do. Imagine Luhnow with no budgetary constraints. The only issue maybe fans getting impatient with "the process"
They embraced the evil long ago. I don't think any move would be considered beyond the pale by Yankee fans. I do think Luhnow would encounter a different sort of ownership in NY than in HOU.
There is no way the Yankees would lose 100 games for 3 years. Other teams are trying to replicate the Astros' process and it hasn't worked so far. You have to hit on your draft picks, hit on your trades for prospects, and sign the right international free agents.
WTF is this ****ing thread a day after we sweep the ALCS and clinch our 4th WS spot in 6 years. Blocked. Geezus. GTFFOH
I raised this very point yesterday morning in the Luhnow thread! Desperate people (the Yankees) are prone to doing desperate things.
Would be VERY surprised if JV went to the NYY. The problem with the NYY isn't their pitching. Their problem (and it's been this way for a good number of yrs) is they're WAY too dependent on the long ball and they strikeout WAY too much. They don't have a lineup that can play small ball, take walks, and string together a few hits which you NEED to be able to do in the playoffs when facing elite pitching. Against the Stros in the ALCS. Gm1 17 K Gm2 13 K Gm3 11 K Gm4 9 K TOTAL 50 K So 50 of 108 outs came on K. That's .462% of your outs coming on K. They may be able to get away with a high % in the regular season but NO WAY IN HELL is this going to work against a team like the Astros. One of the biggest things Luhnow did was fix this issue with the Stros. Back in '16 they lead MLB in K. The following yr ('17) they were first. They've taken this same formula since then (were the lowest in MLB this yr). Until the NYY/Cashma realize's how big of an issue this is for them (and more importantly rebuild their team to cut down on the K) they'll keep getting knocked out in the playoffs.
In their defense, they desperately missed having DJ Lemahieu and Benentendi in their lineup… guys that would have been able to be more versatile situational hitters. I agree that they’re not going to go after pitching… nor are they going after SS. Their #1 prospects are middle infielders. They are heavily invested in pitching and will always trade for more if they need it. The Yankees major problem is that they’re not the Astros… and that they’re just another “good” team. Obviously need health and some good fortune to have success in the playoffs, unless you’re built like the Astros.
They've been really bad at development overall. The baby bombers era completely fizzled. Compounded with not great professional scouting and they have a hodgepodge of under performing youngsters and veterans. PItching wise they used to be nails at developing high velocity relief pitchers but they got hit with a massive injury bug this year.
They'd have been a better team this year with Gio Urshella vs. Josh Donaldson. They lucked out on career stretches from Cortes and Carpenter. They are behind the times if you look at all their front office leadership roles... guys have been there for awhile, you tend to get stagnant at your developmental strategies.
