WHO: Swine flu pandemic has begun, 1st in 41 years

GENEVA (AP) - The World Health Organization has told its member nations it is declaring a swine flu pandemic - the first global flu epidemic in 41 years.

The move came Thursday as infections climbed in the United States, Europe, Australia, South America and elsewhere.

In a statement sent to member countries, WHO says it decided to raise the pandemic alert level from phase 5 to 6, meaning that a global outbreak of swine flu has begun. The decision was made after the U.N. health agency held an emergency meeting on swine flu with its experts.

26 people so far in Tasmania.

    Over 1500 in Australia.

    No deaths yet.

Most people report it as being less damaging than the regular flu.

    All a scam I say.

We will see if it comes back harder in the fall. For now though, I tend to agree AussieRocket.

If influenza was static, perhaps... but influenza is constantly changing. I think the big fear is that this strain joins with the regular strain out there and creates a new strain that most of us have never encountered. Not saying it will happen or if it does, that it will be a huge killer, but even a flu season 3-4 times as intense as we usually have would be tough and have many ramifications.

The point is that nobody really knows what's going to happen between now and December and this bears watching as closely as we can. On the other hand, there's not much we as individuals can do, so maybe the dismissive approach is the one to take unless you work at CDC or somewhere similar.

My niece just got back from a trip to NY and someone else on the trip had a confirmed case of swine flu.

Of course, he has already recovered and didn't even know he had it until after he got better (using over the counter cold medication).

A new study linking similar traits in current H1N1 to 1918 Flu:

Also a slightly older article on H1N1's effect on the Inuit community. The aboriginal were one of the hardest hit in 1918, and seems to be a recurring theme this time.

Add the fact that this current pandemic has a disproportionate effect on healthy young adults compared with the normal flu, and the similarities to 1918 start to mount. To the people who think this is nothing, I don't necessarily disagree. However, if you're rationale for it is "it's mild", well, add that as another similarity.

With most vaccine manufacturing only coming online 6 months after discovery, missing the upcoming fall flu season, we can only hope the similarities end with the above.

WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!

Don't trust your neighbor, he could be infected!
Your friends, family - anyone could have it!

If you need me( which you wont, you dirty swine-flu carrying monkey!), I will be in ROXRAN's bunker.

This is where my reclusive hermit lifestyle actually has a benefit. I gotta clean my keyboard and computer at work, wipe door knobs and faucet knobs, disinfect my debit card and I'm 97% protected from other human life.
Yeah that can take out more people than the flu itself

No one knows how this thing is going to turn out. And don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. There are definite similarities to 1918. On the other hand it could turn out to be absolutely nothing. It's anyone's guess. But for issues like this, where there is no credible consensus, I say follow the money to get to the answer.

Novavax, Sinovac, and Hemispherx Biopharma are small biotech companies in the early stages of developing experimental vaccines for Pandemic viruses. I name these companies because of their speculative nature. Large pharmaseutical companies such as Novartis also develope vaccines, but their stock prices are not as exaggerated. Since the Swine flu outbreak, these companies' stock prices initially skyrocketed, then retraced, and since continued an upward clime.

While no one in the mainstream media is talking about this anymore, you can bet the money follows everything. If the stocks for theses companies go on a steep upward clime, then you know something is up. If they peter out and eventually gravitate back down then you know it's nothing serious.

    Stock ticker: NVAX, SVA, HEB
