Miles would be a perfect throw in for that deal. I would have loved to seen him draping that tall frame around Stackhouse and watching him throw up airballs like he did the few times T-mac was able to guard him. He has scary potential as a defender in the hands of Dr. Van Gundy and could finish strong when T-Mac or future point guard gets in the lane or runs the break. Outside shot scares me though..
I think I agree completely with Clutch's sentiments here: sure, SAR doesn't play great defense...but that would be too significant of an addition to turn down if you don't have to pay too much.
You have me sold. I still have Marshall as the Rockets #1 option for PF because of his outside shooting and defense, but SAR would be an awesome 3rd scoring option for the Rockets.
SAR is my top choice as well. he may have been on losing teams but i've never seen his character questioned(stomile swift) and really whats more important? as someone brought up, juwon howard was on losing teams prior to us and he came in with a winning attitude. don't let labels fool you, SAR is a good player. also, deuce's plan would be the freaking greatest offseason ever. well other than the whole getting t-mac thing.
Seems like Portland would want to deal (SAR + DA or DMiles) to get cap space for next off-season. I don't think Memphis will be that desperate (Swift + Wells or Willams) to get rid of Wells or Willams. If we do this, I think we're conference finals material for the next couple of years.
Its funny how were all worried about finding defense at the 4, anyone ever thought that with SAR the other teams gunna worry about finding defense at the 4. We can be a high offense team such as the Suns/mavs, and still play D at most other postions. Overall i think SAR would be awesome.
Wow. Miles has quite a contract to take on: Darius Miles: 8/31/04 6 $48 million '10 That's the date signed, the length, the amount and the year he's a free agent... from Patricia's excellent site. http://www.dfw.net/~patricia/contracts Miles' stats from '04/'05 aren't bad. He started 22 out of 63 games played, averaging 27 minutes. Does he have an injury history? Has a problem with his free throws. FG% .482 3PT% .348 FT%.600 OF:1.10 DEF:3.60 REBS:4.70 AST:2.0 STL:1.19 BLK:1.24 TO:2.49 PF:3.00 PTS:12.8 http://www.nba.com/playerfile/darius_miles/index.html
i think darius miles is one of the most overrated players in the history of the game from the standpoint that so many kids love him so much, even though his game has been average at best to this point. however as a throw in for getting SAR he could be one of the biggest steals ever particularly with that wingspan and the coaching of van gundy. i'd love to see what he could do with that guy.
Ditto mostly (see cavout). I have SAR as #1 choice, Swift as #1B choice, and Evans or Donyell as #2 choices (order depends on contract). However I don't see a problem with having SAR (or DM) AND Howard on the roster. Yes there is a lot of redudency in skills. That is far less important than getting 48MPG of better minutes in the 4 spot. If JH was MoT ehanced, SAR is JH double enhanced. Plus, JH becomes much better than our former back-ups, so overall you have a lot more production from those 48 minutes. Further, both SAR and DM, with three range and jumpshots, can play some 3 minutes. JH is also our emergency (Deke or Yao injured) or small line-up center. So I see JH as valuable regardless who is brought in for the 4 spot. In short, more important that having a different skill set than Howard is another guy to give you quality all-around 4 minutes and who works with the pieces. JH worked very well with the pieces (Tmac, Yao, gurads), if SAR does that in a more athletic, more potent scoring, package, great. Besides Howard's ideal minutes are only about 24 anyway--he can then go hard for those 24, and these will need to be reduced as he gets older. Of all the free agent PFs, SAR is the least likely to be a zero. He has about 3 years of youth and more natural athleticsm on either JH or DM, and has a far superior all around offensive games than Swift or Evans. No one can stop the Dirks or TD or KG on there own, but these guys will have to work, particuarly defensively, versus SAR or he will do his own damage. So, SAR should be our #1 choice and first FA target (full MLE). BTW I don't want Anderson. All the guy was in his youth was an average shooter with excellent athleticism. Now the latter is going, he can't do much and is getting paid like Mo Taylor. No thanks on him unless Portland gives us something more.

He never averaged more then 12-14 PPG, mostly less. He never had less than 8.5 - 12 RPG. JVG is not likely to covet a scoring 4 as much as a boarding, blocking, and defensive 4, period. SAR is JHo with a slight + sign and his stats have been down the last 3 years. JHo just had the worst season of his carreer by about half. I don't think JHo all of a sudden became a worse player, he just didn't prosper in JVG system. He also didn't drop the ball like MoT. IMO the 3rd scoring option needs to come from another position, it will never develop in JVG's system at the 4. I would like to see JHo stay where he is for another year or so, and get a backup change of pace like CAnderson. We can use our MLE and/or expiring contracts on that 1 or 2/3 that we so desparately need. IMO a good swingman scorer is our next biggest need to a b/u 4. A 23-24 year old Spree would be the ideal, Know of one?
If Portland and Shareef were willing to amke this work I'd be happy doing it for expiring contracts and a first rounder. I'd also though only slightly prefer Miles over Anderson as the throw in.
If we could get SAR and DM through trade and still have our MLE and our draft pick as well as possibly our TE, we gotta do something like that. I'm telling you Miles is a player. His problems are off court problems, but he can play. When they were using him last year and going to him on offense, he had a nice baseline jump shot and was hitting it consistently from 15 feet. Check out some of his game stats. We all know he's quick as the dickens and could guard 2's to 4's. That's about as versatile as you can get. Then we still got our MLE to add somebody like Antonio Daniels and our draft pick to pick up another banger in the paint.
If we could get Portland to trade us SAR + DM (heck I'd even take DA) for our ending contract players (all junk) and a pick + resign Motumbo and Barry + use the MLE to shore up the SF position = Plan A.
I see SAR as a Eddie Griffen type player (what we thought eddie would be) lacking the block shot ability but hes a skinny 4 that can shoot the 3 and grab boards, i think it would be interesting to see him in a Rocks uni he has never played as the number 2 or 3 guy he always had to be the man. I would rather have Marshal and another player but if we have the oppurtunity I would love to see him shine in Houston. With Yao as the center the attention would free SAR up for a lot of activity.
I would not mind SAR at all. He's always been a solid player..and he's good. I would like to do a sign and trade for him..and also bring in Badiane as the 3rd power forward. I would also like to draft a 2/3..Warrick or someone..for the perimeter. Yao/Dikembe SAR/Howard/Padgett/Badiane Warrick/SAR/Tmac/Bowen Tmac/Wesley or Barry Actually..I'd love for Mobley to come back..sign and trade crap for SAR and whatever crap. Antonio Daniels or Cuttino Mobley sound like good backcourt additions. Then get either SAR or Donyell Marshall. Bring in Spanoulis and Badiane. Then draft the best talent out of 1/2/3/4 position.
I see SAR being an asset on offense when Yao gets in foul trouble or gets winded but I wonder if he will end up taking shots away from Yao if he,Yao and T-Mac are together on the floor. He also doesn't provide any defensive strength as a 4. If the Rockets get the opportunity to get him which I think is pretty unlikely they should consider him because he is a consistent player but we still would need a athletic defensive 4 in addition to SAR.
Who is JVG's pf as the third option on the Knicks team in the NBA finals? Larry Johnson. LJ wasn't known for defense in his Knicks years. He made an impact with his offensive versatility. He could work down low as well as shoot 3's. Anyone remembers his 4-point micracle shot? As a Knick, LJ couldn't rebound, couldn't block shots, and he's short. It's not like JVG can only utilize defensive players. SAR will be twice the player than LJ.
I think getting SAR is unlikely because he will get more money from the Nets or another team willing to pay a lot. In sign and trade scenarios, the Blazers aren't dumb enough to take players from us they don't want. The only way we should get SAR is if we unload either Spoon or JH back to the Blazers. No team in the NBA wants either player with their contracts. No one will want Spoon until the trade deadline. I guess it's out of sight, out of mind for most people about JH. He was playing very well and was a good fit for our offense before he went down. He finally found his niche on this team and was giving us what we needed: Mid-range jumpers, 8-9 boards a game, he helped the offense flow because other teams had to guard him & he provided good chemistry in the locker room (both T-Mac & Yao liked him). He wasn't chopped liver and SAR is not much of an upgrade. We gotta get a point guard who can pass the ball into the post and who can dish the ball off for dunks and easy shots while driving. All this attention on the PF position is misguided. It was JH's injury and absense that hurt us (i.e., no PF depth), NOT his substandard play.
