Gut instinct says someone is going to pay this guy a lot more than he will ever be worth. To be fair, though, some of us came out of high school knowing how to be self sufficient and some of us had to learn over time. The stuff about him not knowing how to cook for himself and take care of his dry cleaning makes total sense to me. That doesn;t make him a head case. It just means that he was a kid thrust into the life of a pro. I used to see this all the time when I taught college. Some pretty bright kids would wash out just because they couldn't figure out how get their work done while they made the transition from Momma to living on their own. For the first time living away from home, it's not that unusual to find guys who would rather sit around amid piles of dirty laundry, get high and play video games all day than to go to class. I'm not making excuses for the guy, but I do think a couple of years growing up before he hit the NBA would have made a world of difference.
Part of me says...yes..while part of me says no. I dont know if we will find a PF with more upside? It also bodes well for us that his stock has dropped. Of course, stock usually drops for a reason doesnt it? I think like the guy who "taught college" said, maybe he just needs some time to grow up. Not everyone can come in and Armare and Lebron.
No freaking way. We need a reliable PF not a project. Nice going Clutch, back to back players with virtually no chance JVG will add them to the roster. Request for profiles: -DeMarr Johnson, 6-9 SG, thats right he played SG for Denver and had a good PER number. Bobby Simmons – 6-6 SF, excellent PER number and did everyone know T-Mac PER went way down last year. Hummm. Any other unrestricted SG/SF out there?
Kwame Brown is NOT a project! Well, maybe on offense he is, but he's a very good rebounder and a pretty good post defender especially one on one post defense. Isn't that all the Rockets need? The only legitimate concerns I have are all about his head, some on his offensive game, but if your name wasn't Gilbert, Larry, or Antoine you weren't getting any shots on the Bullets, and the Rockets don't need much offense from that position anyway. As far as rebounding and defense go though, he's excellent for a young guy and for a guy that was playing in Washington where defense wasn't something most of the players and coaches worried about. I would expect great things from him with Jeff Van Gundy as his coach in those two phases of the game. Rockets should at the very least take a look at him.
To be young and tall. You can quit on the job and expect nearly double the annual salary the next year.
not as crazy as miami having the first, second, and third players from the 1992 draft right now. the funny thing is that when jim jackson failed to report to new orleans, miami was one of the places he was rumored to go. that would have been the first four picks of that year's draft. anyway, brown would be ok, but i'd rather the rox go after songalia (sp?) from sac-town as someone said in another thread. the dude is young, hustles his arse off, can hit an outside j, and can bang inside. kinda reminds me of kenny thomas a bit.
I think Kwame might grumble if he doesn't get the number of shots he wants. He is talented but we also need someone who has the mental maturity along with skills to play alongside Yao and T-Mac. I would pass up on him.
If we decided to get Kwame for his potential, we'd have to bring in someone who was his personal coach, to help him grow up. We obviously didn't help Stevie or Griffin in that way, even though it would have protected and developed our huge investments, so I doubt we'd do that for Kwame ... unfortunately.
i say we bring in MJ to groom kwame. seriously i hope we give this guy a chance. unless we sign sar or a half decent pf i say we go out and make a BOLD move.
No thanks on Kwame. He has a bad attitude, a bad work ethic, and just isn't that good overall. He'll go for the money so I doubt the Rockets are in the running. Let him take his attitude and baggage elsewhere. WE NEED TO WIN NOW!!
Physically, he's exactly what they need at the 4/5 spot. But, you can't coach heart and toughness of which he has neither. Million dollar body - 10 cent brain.
I just can't see it. We didn't go to any great lengths to insure Griffin was getting looked after, despite what we traded to draft him. Why on earth would we expect JVG and CD to aquire this guy? Because of the "P" word? The word I'd use that starts with a p is pass. Nice profiles, Clutch. Keep 'em coming.
I think his hands are smaller than mine and I look Steve Nash in the eye. I like big mits on the big men. We've already got one small handed big man and we constantly complain about him holding onto the ball. I don't want another. We need a PF with OT mits.
I hope he goes elsewhere for big money and takes out a potential suiter for SAR or Swift. If the market dried out and he was looking for a team, I consider it, I can't see it though.
Except...MJ wasn't exactly beloved in the Washington lockerroom. And they weren't all headcases. And if you're stating that as an absolute rule - you're absolutely full of crap. Players that begin poorly like Kwame - sometimes do succeed. Sometimes they don't. It's a gamble. I think this one would be low-risk/high reward. I'd do it, if you can get him for the MLE. I wouldn't part with Howard. He's a Proven Commodity. But if it's just (someone else's) money? Sure. He could be exactly what we need - in a way nobody else on the board can.
I think he signs with his hometown in Atlanta, but if by some chance he considers us you have to make the move. Being a Pittsburgher and die-hard Steelers fan, he kind of reminds me of Plaxico Burress. Big, dopy looking & talented player with all the potential in the world. You know he is CAPABLE of breaking out at any given moment but of course there are plenty of questions about heart, motivation, etc. It's obviously a bit of a gamble but then again, in this business what isn't a gamble? He's only 23 years old, if he lowers his asking price and accepts the MLE you have a relatively low risk, high reward investment. In that case, let's just hope this uhh, "stud" PF from the '01 draft pans out this time around.
I definitely would love to take the gamble if MLE can get him. The only reason is: Rockets need a TALENT upgrade in order to compete with the best of the west. Acquiring a mediocre productive PF, e.g. Donyell Marshall, have limited upside to the team, while Kwame Brown at least possibly shine one day. He is much less a head case than EG, and well, even EG is producing in TimberWolves. KH
Thanks, Clutch. I'd take a long hard look at Kwame if he were willing to take the MLE, but in the end, I would talk to Ewing and assess whether he thinks Kwame could adjust to the team. Ewing's opinion would be the deciding factor.
I just think there is so much more proven talent that we can use our MLE on. What has Kwame done?? But I do agree with Relativist in a sense, ever since JVG has become our coach CD has become one of the best GMs in basketball. So if the Rockets go for Kwame then I'll be for it.
