Very good article. Loved reading it. Donyell Marshall would be nice. Him and Juwan..both 32 woudl be solid at the 4 position. I really have not seen Marshall do anything spectacular..and have not seen him rebound very well..but if we do get him, I hope he does rebound. He is better than nothing. It's interesting that his family lives in Chicago, but Chicago has a lot of players already. I hope we can get Donyell. Also bring in Malick to develop..if he's ready. And then we will add some youth with our first round draft pick..a 2/3 or 4..or maybe a 1
I want Marshall even though I don't want more than a 3-yr. contract. He'll want four, but I don't want a 36 year old Marshall in 4 yrs.
Marshall's game could be better here than many of us think. But I still don't want to get a 4 that hoists up a lot of 3s. Realistically I think he's the most attainable though of all the pf's we've been discussing.
Marshall is not the high intensity type of power forward that I think the Rockets need. But that may be because he's stuck on such a poor team. I'd still prefer a younger, more aggressive 4 that plays with passion. For part of the MLE, I wouldn't mind him, but definitely not for the full MLE.
Assuming the MLE is about the same and can be for 6 years in the next CBA. A 4-year MLE (23mil) for him is reasonable, and it is what he will get from someone. Consider JH got a 6 year MLE 2 years ago (but we will be paying about 22% less for DM over those 4 years at the same ages because of raises on JH contract his 1st two years). Etan Thomas and Cardinal, younger but less complete 4s, got full 6 year MLEs too (37mil). Yeah, we might not get our money's worth in year 4, but we are getting a good deal the first 2 years for a servicable NBA 4, the last year is the price you pay. If he agreed to a team option in year 4, great, but that should not be the make or break part of the contract. DM/JH can hold the fort the next couple of seasons (about 24 MPG each) while you groom future drafties or young FAs (James Thomas?) to ulitimately take over. He may want to go to Chicago because his family is there, but they are not as good as we are, he will play a lesser role (assuming Chandler and Curry are signed), and Chicago may be less included to spend that much on an older back-up. It is a much better fit here from the team and player perspective. He is not my 1st choice as a FA, but I'll be happy if we get him.
Desert Scar, Great reasoning, and I agree with you 100% - especially if the Rockets get a 4th yr. TEAM option. I just hate paying tons for nothing. Hey, we're paid Mutombo Shaquille O'Neal money last year, but damn Mutombo was good (and we can sign him for less this year). -P1st, S2nd
I watched quite a few Marshall's games where he was with the Warriors, my feeling was that he was the knid of player that could fill the stats sheet, but wouldn't impact the outcome of the game. I always thought he won't be able to function in a displine system, but his tenure with the Jazz proved me wrong. So I guess his game changed/improved?
Donyell Marshall used to be called "Super Scrub" here at ClutchFans for playing like a bust early in his career, but the 6-foot-9 forward has shown he's anything but a scrub. This sentence is self-contradictory, no? Great article otherwise.
only if Shaq money was around 5M. which we both know it isnt. The Rockets paid only a small percentage of what Deke made last year.
No, its not really self-contradictory. The sentence is saying that early in his career, he was called a "Super Scrub" because he played like one. However, he is playing anything but like a scrub nowadays.
Sure would be nice to drag some opposing PFs out to the 3-pt line. With such a shortage of true centers and the PF position often stronger/more athletic, what havoc could Yao and TMac wreak on the lane?
Marshall is my first choice for a PF, I think he is the most well rounded PF out of the FAs this summer. His shooting ability is a HUGE plus. The Rockets offense really started rolling when JH started hitting that mid-range jumper, Marshall is a better shooter and has a lot more range. He is also a good rebounder. As Clutch said, he has averaged double-digit boards twice in his career, I would say he could get us 7-8rpg.
Nice article, good breakdown. It put me a bit more into the DM camp. I have been a bit wary of Donyell because of his age, but he might be a temporary fix (and upgrade) until we can nail down the pf we really want.
With Marshall we could go big sometimes: Yao Howard Marshall T-Mac Sura If what the others say is true and the max he will get is 4 year MLE then he will probably get a few offers at that. If we get him I won't be disappointed. Waiting for the SAR profile.
That big lineup would make some teams pay for trying to play small ball. That is impressive. Yao Howard Marsahll McGrady Sura or James
ok, so this IS a great additin if the rocks can land him. But he's still the backup to Juwan IMO till further notice. I just believe that JH will be the starter unless he is traded, as it should be in a van gundy line up. The time to change will be apparent, if needed..IF NEEDED..
I tink new Jersey is paying him Shaq dollars. Strangely enough NJ also paid huge bucks to Alonzo Morning and got zero for it. Both were "Jason Kidd Signings". He has to be the worst GM in the league.
We only paid Mutumbo around 4 million last year. Another team had to pick up the rest of the bill. So, if Shaq can be had for 4 million, sign me up.
