Why no love for SVG? I thought he was pretty strong in Miami.

Hmm...Doc Rocket voted for Marc Iavaroni. I wonder if that means something.

    :) What I was thinking.

I always felt like he deserved more credit for their championship than what he got (er...which was easy since he got 0 credit).

Then we should get a donkey as our mascot so barkely can kiss it's butt everytime yao scores 20 or more points. after a while people wont be able to tell the dfference between barkley or the donkey.

Riley built the team... he always had a pulse on what SVG was doing, and he handpicked the roster for him.

In a heart beat. people tend to have this silly notion that pat is a boring all defensive coach. remember who built the most exciting run and gun showtime team of alltime in the 80's?...

He had Magic Johnson... once he stopped having Magic, he could never run that style again.

Hell... he has J. Will in Miami... who has some talent at PG. Why do you think he refuses to re-incarnate showtime?

A great coach plays to the strength of he's players. he knew a team with magic is best suited to be a running team. like he knew a team with the rigged and beefy Knicks players was better suited to being a halfcourt slugg it out trench warfare team.
BTW, Jwill running a showtime kind of team is hillarious. sure he makes some flashy passes, but he's decision making attrocious. magic was not only a great passer, he could read the play as soon as he got the ball in he's hands.

All I'm saying is that Magic was the ONLY player possible to lead that showtime bunch... and in that case, it's not simply the coach... its the players he has that dictate EVERYTHING.

Magic is one of the top 5 players ever... its not suprising that he had a major role in defining a whole new style of playing basketball.

Right now, only Nash and Kidd could probably pull off similiar results... and there's no way that Riley would ever think about implementing that system here.

In fact, he would probably have us slow it down even more, and take less 3's, pound it more into Yao.

Bottom line... Miami is more suited to run, given their roster, than we are... and they don't. That's all that needs to be said.

Miami is suited to running?.. with shaq, mourning, walker, payton, haselem?. running?.. oh comon man... even posey is a better suited to being in a halfcourt stagnant defensive system.

I think P.J. Carlesimo would be a good candidate. The spurs offense isnt as boring and stagnant as the ROckets and i'm sure he's learned a thing or two about defense from being with Popovich for such a long time.

You misunderstood me... I said Miami is MORE suited to running than HOUSTON.

Shaq runs better than Yao, Walker can lead a break, D. Wade can finish with the best of them, Mourning runs better than Deke, Haslem is more versatile than Hayes... even Posey is better suited to finishing than Battier/Head/Alston.

This is just to dispel the myth that Riley would create a fun-and-gun showtime system here. If he didn't do it with Miami, he wouldn't do it here.

Oh ok. fair enough. my point was Riley will coach a more uptempo offense if he had the tools. but you're right, the rockets are not built for that kind of offense..

My 2 cents: I would like to see the Rockets not settle for one of the usual coaching retreads again (Adeleman, Brown, Carlisle). I think they should take a chance and try something out of the box and to that end, I would like to see Kareem Abdul Jabbar as the next head coach. He's been aching for a head coaching gig for some time now and this guy definitely knows how to coach and play championship basketball.

And by tools... you mean one of the greatest players EVER... the likes of which will never be seen again. :D
